Panic! Need a dress from my brother's wedding in less than 3 weeks, I'll be 8 weeks pregnant. The dress I have won't fit!

So it's my brother's wedding in November. I'm not quite 6 weeks pregnant and just tried on the two dresses vying for the role on the day, and neither is going to fit me :( They are both quite slim fit around my hips and bum and they are already looking a little too tight to be elegant. I suspect in 3 weeks time they'll just look wrong.

So now I need to panic buy!

Me:

  • 36 so not a spring chicken
  • 14/16 (mainly 14 but possibly 16 right now), pear-shaped but with big and (getting bigger) boobs so can get away with hourglass type looks.
  • 5ft 6
  • Usual wedding style and price is Hobbs but the necklines are all wrong this season. I need scoop neck or v neck given the big boobs.
  • On the knee. Maxi and mini are both awful on me.
  • Am Autumn colour - best colours are brown, mustard, green, teal and lighter navy.

I will be unlikely to get wear from this again given I hope not to be this size for long (going up from here and then hopefully coming back down below!) and money is a little tight so ideally don't want to spend my usual Hobbs £150ish budget but it is my brother's wedding so if I have to I will :)

All help gratefully received!

I wore a Tiffany Rose dress for my wedding when I was 6 months pregnant, it was stretchy (no shaping for a bump) so you would get another wear from it

I ordered 4, two colours in two sizes and they were fine about me sending the rest back!

Oh I love that dress - had it earmarked for anything posh next year when I have a bump rather than just flab! But sounds like it might work now though if it's not got obvious bump shaping. Thanks - will order it and see.

I kept the smaller of the sizes I ordered, if that helps at all, as I preferred the tighter fit rather than a bit looser but there wasn't much in it as it is so stretchy. I was a bit worried about the see through lace part and seeing a bra strap through it, I asked them what they would recommend and they said most people just wore a nude bra, but I found a strapless slip type thing (Triumph, from John Lewis) I wore instead. Like an elastic tube really!

Thank you - they have some gorgeous dresses so think I am going to order a selection.

I understand that this www.bhs.co.uk/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?refinements=category~%5b208648%7c208600%5d%5ecategory~%5b1153782%7c208648%5d%5ecategory~%5b1154015%7c1153782%5d&beginIndex=1&viewAllFlag=&catalogId=33053&storeId=12552&productId=12203659&langId=-1&sort_field=null&categoryId=208600&parent_categoryId=&pageSize=200&refinements=category~[208648|208600]^category~[1153782|208648]^category~[1154015|1153782
looks vile, but please believe me when I say it is the most flattering dress I have worn since I was a size 12. I wore it recently to a wedding with bright blue peeptoes and felt fabulous. It's gently ruched across the stomach and made my wobbly size 14/16 belly disappear. There's 15% off too at the moment.

DavenotChas · 16/10/2013 16:35

Bollocks. You probably wouldn't like it anyway. If you're interested it's called Billie and Blossom splatter jersey body con and it's as cheap as chips Grin

I've found it :) Actually that looks worth a punt, esp for the money. Even if not suitable for the wedding it would likely work for the next couple of months while normal clothes don't work but maternity clothes look weird. I like a nice stretchy dress at the best of times, and waistbands and I do not get on during any stage of pregnancy so I'm particularly into dresses at the moment :)

You are terribly kind. I rarely venture into style and beauty as I'm possessed with neither. Enjoy your wedding. And your pregnancy. Mwah Grin

Thank you for your help. I bought a whole load of dresses yesterday, had them delivered today.

Two of the three Tiffany Rose ones are lovely but just not quite right on me - wrong length or wrong shape. This one is lovely on but not quite weddingy enough but I am going to keep it for other things.

DavenotChas - I am going to keep the one you linked to for daywear over the next couple of months as it's lovely and stretchy and the pattern will help hide the flab/bump :) Not cleavagey enough for me and weddings - I like to show off a bit of boob ;)

I'm going with this for the wedding. It's the same neckline as the one I wanted to wear but that won't quite fit and has lots of room around the belly area for expansion in the next 3 weeks!

Thank you for your help x
