Hi there,
having invested in some fab New Look skinny jeans (thanks all for jeans thread), was wondering about some ankle biker boots...

Spotted these so far

M&S]]

Clarks

Fly

But question is, my legs are not long, even for a shorta**e. Are these going to make them look shorter - stick to my knee high boots?

Wouldn't knee high boots make your legs look shorter as they are cutting your legs in half whereas ankle boots are only cutting them off at the ankle? I like the M&S boots best but they are all nice.

Abzs · 14/10/2013 21:00

I'm also wondering this, though I'm after Chelsea rather biker style. I think they need to be actual ankle boots, not coming up to the calf iyswim.

Calf length ones also have the potential to my legs look like tree trunks. Like midi skirts, need to avoid them hitting the widest part of the leg. Not so easy when they all are designed for giraffes taller people.

FracturedViewOfLife · 14/10/2013 21:01

I'm 5'3" and have short legs. I much prefer ankle boots than knee length on myself.

I like the M&S ones the most too.

NoComet · 14/10/2013 21:23

Long boots or skinny jeans over ankle boots are my rule. Biker boots don't work on me.

I'm 5'4, and have size 4 feet, and it's partly the boots cut my legs in the wrong place and partly the clumpy boots don't scale.

Somehow, biker boots the right size, still look three sizes too big and I look like a garden gnome

ColouringInQueen · 14/10/2013 21:29

Hmm. Thanks everyone. So shorter style ankle boots might be better.. I have some lovely old walking boots which I think work ok - so maybe something the same height as them.

Can't believe the M&S ones are coming out on top (even my 20 something dsis likes them) - and they're the cheapest Grin Will have to get trying on....

Twinklestein · 14/10/2013 21:37

I'm 5'5 & I say no, I don't wear them, & I've got long legs for my height.

There are plenty of women here who will disagree, but personally I don't think it's a good look.

To lengthen the leg I'd go for shoe boots or knee length slim-fitting boots. Ankle boots cut your legs up & make them look shorter.

dexter73 · 14/10/2013 21:40

Twinklestein - don't knee length boots cut your leg in half and make them look even shorter than if you had ankle boots on?

Twinklestein · 14/10/2013 22:12

Not in my experience, but it depends on the boot. I wear very slim-fitting boots that I have taken in to fit (my legs are twiglets). I wear them with skinny jeans, leggings, dresses/skirts. I find a streamlined look from the toe to the knee is much more flattering than ankle boots that cut the bottom of your leg off where they hit the boot.

feelinlucky · 14/10/2013 22:15

Ooh, those m&s ones are lush :) don't be crazy, just get them if you try them on and they suit you. I'm 5'3 and have 3 pairs of ankle boots and love them.

scarlet76 · 15/10/2013 04:54

I'm a skinny 5ft. I wear Ash Jalouse ankle boots. They sort of dip at the front which I think makes them more flattering.

IDugUpADiamond · 15/10/2013 07:08

I think if you're slim, yes

feelinlucky · 15/10/2013 19:31

I'm not slim. I'm positively average and still look good in ankle boots. Fact!

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 15/10/2013 20:26

Yes. I'm 5'2 but have long (and quite slim) legs compared to the rest of me. I don't like the Fly ones though.

Personally, I prefer Chelsea boots or slightly slouchy stacked heel ankle boots, rather than bikers.

thriftychic · 15/10/2013 21:05

i am 5ft 1 and last year i must have ordered and tried a million pairs of boots before i figured out what looked best.
knee high boots look nice so long as they reach the knee and they have a bit of a heel. Ankle boots only work when they are short ones maybe like these www.clarks.co.uk/p/20355840 and a bit of a heel is better . anything that comes up the ankle doesnt look right on me nor do biker boots . I also wear a coat that is quite short , as in just covers bum rather than longer to the knee styles as the more leg showing the taller i think it makes me look . obviously i could be completely wrong here and be walking around looking a prat !

Specialbrew · 15/10/2013 21:27

5 2" here, and ankle boots look perfectly fine on me!

I don't wear bikers though, not my style and they look a bit clunky on me. I tend to wear my ankle boots with a small heel, and the heel needs to slope 'in' if you know what I mean. I have a pair of grey Ash ankle boots that I wear with grey, Indigo or burgundy skinnies, and some day dresses, and I have a pair of Sam Edelman Petty boots in black that I wear with black skinnies.

I wear knee high boots too, but again they need a bit of a heel to even look remotely right on me. I have a lovely pair of flat riding boots, but I just can't get them to work.

I think you just need to try on a lot of style and figure out what looks right.

jamtoast12 · 15/10/2013 21:29

I'm 5'5" and wouldn't wear ankle boots as I feel I'm too short...unless you have very thin legs that is.

ColouringInQueen · 15/10/2013 21:30

Wow thanks so much everyone. I will have to take a trip to M&S Grin

Get those m&s boots, the are fabulous. I just paid £200 for a pair from All Saints. I love them but honestly if I had seen those m&s ones first I would have bought those. I'm jealous :)

NotAnotherPackedLunch · 15/10/2013 21:37

Depends on how big your feet are.

Mine are way too big for ankle boots to look anything other than comedy shoes. Sad

ColouringInQueen · 16/10/2013 21:48

Hmm well M&S boots good, but quite tall on my short legs so not 100% convinced. Only had them in black but that did make for a good silhouette with dark indigo skinnies... Tried some other biker brown ones, but to light - looked like tinkerbell or something!

the quest continues...

ColouringInQueen · 01/11/2013 21:22

Update...

  • M&S boots were too tall, tried on some others from there but didn't fit.
  • Clarks ones not v good leather
  • Fly ones - bought online from Office with 20% off and they are gorgeous. Really good leather and great fit - am v pleased - and now eyeing up the Fly tall boots!!!

ihearttc · 01/11/2013 22:15

Im only 4ft 10 so I feel your pain!

Im not in the least bit stylish but have this year purchased some new ankle boots and am wearing my skinny jeans over the top of them...mine are from Office and are called Upside Down (am totally useless and can't do links) and I definitely feel better about myself than I have done in previous years.

I have also got some lovely knee high boots (think they are actually supposed to be mid calf height but on me are knee high) and they look ok as well cause it almost makes my legs look longer-I have no idea how it does but it does!

ColouringInQueen · 01/11/2013 23:25

Good for you! It's amazing the difference a good pair of boots can make. I have been eyeing up the Fly knee high boots too but lots of reviews say they're not so good for the chunky-calfed...

Oh the joys of being short! Have you discovered New Look skinnies - they do them in short lengths and v comfy Smile

Colouringinqueen - can you link to the Fly boots you bought? I'm also 5.2 (and going to try those NL skinnies). Thanks for tips!
