Help me find a smart casual coat for an over 50 yr old

Hi I want a winter coat, smart but not too smart and casual but not scruff or fuddy duddy. I want it to be warm and waterproof and bum covering preferably knee length, something I can wear to walk my dogs or go to the pub and wear when shopping or in town. I'm tall size 14 and my general look is jeans or cargo type trousers and casual tops with big scarves. I have a north face insulated coat (my mrs blobby coat :))
Any suggestions I'll be grateful to get

Perhaps no-one is aware of any strictly "over 50" shops. Halloween ShockHalloween Hmm

What were you thinking to use that title? Please, please re-phrase.

No-one has ever suggested to me that I am only allowed to shop in age restricted enclaves. So it's quite likely that you also are allowed to walk into any shop and buy what you like.

I will probably want to apologise when I have calmed down. But for the moment I am furious.

I've had the same dilemma. I'm your age, and in the end I bought a Topshop parka. It's khaki, covers the bum and has a detachable inner wooly lining and hood. £85.

At the moment I'm wearing it without the lining.

Hate coat shopping with a vengeance!

Sthing perhaps you are right there,

I actually don't see age as an issue for me or in relation to anyone else but you don't know that because you don't know me.
My style is smart casual or casual scruff:) As a working artist, now I'm retired from teaching my fingernails are invariably paint stained and my clothes usually have paint or bleach stains. I get my clothes from a wide range of shops.
I got this coat today:
www.marksandspencer.com/Plus-Funnel-Neck-Bouclé-Coat/dp/B00DSVWVTQ?ie=UTF8&ref=sr_1_43&nodeId=2594081031&sr=1-43&qid=1381852095

My posting mentions over 50 ( maybe I wasn't thinking) because I was looking for a smart coat as I already have several casual parkas in different weights and jackets, and I dread being thought of as mutton, I did, however, try to delete the bit about age and couldn't find a way to do it

Anyway, Sthing I hopeyour anger has dissipated now, cause, for god sake there's bigger things to get angry about in this world :)

Thanks biryani for your suggestions

What I like about mumsnet is that in all my 2/3 years of being on it you can't just muck in and give and receive support advice and partake in the banter regardless of age or social, political background.

I meant that you can just muck in with mumsnet :)

Well thank you for being so graciousHalloween Smile

I just get so frustrated by threads that seem to assume that anyone over 40 should be dressing "like someone's Gran." (Direct quote) (And my mother is elderly, a grandmother and impossibly glamorous...) (But actually I do think it's quite important that this half of the human race is not dismissed as irrelevant after a certain age...)

Your life sounds rather fun.

I googled North Face to get an idea of budget and selected not quite at random - just across a range of shops. Glad to hear you've found something. Though distressed that artists are encouraging M&S in their weirdness.... (Double square brackets fore and aft would enable us to inspect your old lady purchase.)

hettie · 15/10/2013 18:45

I saw quite a cool/smartish coat on the vaude website...or failing that the mumsnet stand-bye of merrel haven?

Sthingmustbescaringthemaway · 15/10/2013 19:31

Alternatively - I'm putting this on my sale wishlist....

Nellymay · 15/10/2013 22:18

Well, me hearties this is the coat I bought although this one shows it in a plus size and I can't find the regular size pic on the website. This it - square bracketed an all www.marksandspencer.com/Plus-Funnel-Neck-Bouclé-Coat/dp/B00DSVZ9JA?ie=UTF8&pf_rd_r=1MWZDNXY70SN8HVNSZHB&pf_rd_m=A2BO0OYVBKIQJM&pf_rd_t=301&pf_rd_i=0&pf_rd_p=215432007&pf_rd_s=left-3
Well what do you think, Sthing and co?? Not bad for dear old M n S. So, does it say to you trendy/stylish/glamour/ artistic??? And not old bat/old fart/old bag or mutton??

Sthing I agree absolutely! I never want to be irrelevant although I love being irreverent :) I'm from a family of strong women - my mum was a local councillor singlehandedly taking on loan sharks at 75years old

Ps I think the £700 parka will have to stay on your wishlist - for a long time ...
Bye, all for now, got to go and be creative. :)

Fabulous for painting on a windy hillside Halloween Grin

BTW I have just (on another S&B thread) sent someone off to wander round galleries - to enhance her confidence in dressing her own individual self. Did I do right?

Nellymay · 15/10/2013 23:07

Sounds good to me. At least she might get to peruse some interesting people.
