Capsule wardrobe for a mum of 3

happygreeneggsandham · 12/10/2013 20:34

My DC3 is almost one, I have just wentmy wardrobe and it is a strange mix: old office clothes, trousers of all shapes/sizes/colours (fitting for different stages of pregnancy and post-pregnancy), some nice things bought on sale/in a haste but not going with anything etc.

The idea is to have a new capsule wardrobe (budget: 300 GBP) in order to look stylish and trendy! I'm size 10 and 5.5 tall.

So the items will be:

  1. Biker boots like this
www.clarks.co.uk/p/20356859
  1. Navy pea coat:
www.uniqlo.com/uk/store/goods/080483
  1. One pair of skinny jeans (black)
  1. One bright-coloured jumper and one dark grey cardi from Woolovers
  1. A chunky hat and scarf like this:

www.hm.com/gb/product/15482?article=15482-A

www.hm.com/gb/product/15487?article=15487-A#cm_vc=GOES_WITH_PD

What do you think? Does it look too safe/boring?

Can you do your post again so the links work? They sound like the kind of things I'd like!

Here you go - hope it works!

I think they look a great place to start.

Which styles were you thinking of from Woolovers?

happygreeneggsandham · 13/10/2013 21:12

A dark grey cardi and an orange jumper

I really like the French brand Comptoir des Cotonniers - a sort of casual smart style but their prices are too high. About 9 years ago I bought a few pieces but the prices were relatively ok back then.

I would go with the capsule wardrobe you've listed (sounds useful, assuming you have t-shirts/vests etc?).

For the future, might be worth thinking about when things need replacing and going for the next step up in quality, iykwim, so you can have more investment pieces that will last longer (shops like Comptoir, Cos etc). Probably not possible when you're at the I-need-a-whole-new-wardrobe-right-now stage. I remember it well.

QueenCadbury · 14/10/2013 21:27

That all sounds great as long as it all goes with what you ve in your wardrobe already. As a mum to 3 dc I find it easier to have a 'uniform' of jeans (blue or black), tees/blouses in neutral colours (black/navy/white/grey) and then coloured cardigans. It means everything goes together and I can mix and match tops and cardigans.

Then just add in some jewellery and lippy and you're done.

Happy shopping Smile

I would change Clarks to Carvela (Kurt Geiger) though- www.tkmaxx.com/view-all-shoes/studded-grey-leather-calf-boots/invt/39749966?VBMST=Carvela

Paribus · 14/10/2013 23:51

TBH, I would also upgrade a scarf to www.tkmaxx.com/view-all-accessories/grey-cashmere-scarf/invt/19492669&bklist=icat,4,shop,1,1918 as HM one will probably bobble within a couple of washes. If you need a set, this can be an alternative- www.tkmaxx.com/view-all-accessories/cream-heart-patterned-hat/invt/19172617&bklist=icat,5,shop,1,19,9019 and www.tkmaxx.com/view-all-accessories/cream-knitted-scarf/invt/19172171&bklist=icat,4,shop,1,1918 privided you are not allergic to heart prints :).

MillyMillyMe · 15/10/2013 01:31

Nooooo....the original OPs boots are subtle. Love them.

snowlie · 15/10/2013 07:15

Love the ops boots too, remember Clarks have 20% off code, you can use it in the shop and they'll post out your boots - mad system but if it saves nearly £20 why not?
I have a uniqlo code too if you'd like, £10 off.

Click44 · 15/10/2013 10:01

Sorry to jump in but the pea coat is just what I am looking for. Have you bought it? I would have to order online, am a 12-14 so wondering what size to go for.

happygreeneggsandham · 15/10/2013 10:04

Thanks for your suggestions! Love the grey TK Maxx scarf, bt heart patterns are not my thing tbh.

Would be really grateful for Clarks and UNICLO codes!

Click 44: I haven't bought the coat yet, as I'm not sure about the size either - I'm a size 10 so I don;t know if I should get an S or an M. Will try to go to a shop to try it on.

Ooooooh, I like the Clarks boots...really nice :)

ElizabethBathory · 15/10/2013 10:25

That's a lovely coat. My DH has one of their pea coats and it's gorgeous, has lasted several winters and still looks new.

But I agree you should upgrade scarf if possible - I've had a few things like that from H&M and they look bobbly and miserable after a few weeks. You could try searching eBay for 'wool cable scarf' - as it's a classic style you're after there should be loads? Just seen these for example.

soupmaker · 15/10/2013 10:37

Love it. That's my capsule wardrobe too. Clarks boots are fantastic and so comfortable and you'll get at least two if not three winters out of them.

Once the weather is a bit better all you need is a pair of flats and converse.

If you can, I agree you should try and get better quality hat and scarf. I have a couple of wool scarves that have lasted me over 10 years and I get compliments every winter when they get dragged out. A stripy multi coloured wool one from GAP and a bright fushia wool fringed one from Johnstones.

I cheer up my wardrobe with bright t-shirts and vests.

For evening I add heels and a blouse or top with a bit of sparkle!

moralimbecile · 15/10/2013 10:41

Clarks has 20 % off in their email today, check their website ?

duckyfuzz · 15/10/2013 10:47

Clarks code is BDAY

Gap is good for basics that last

snowlie · 15/10/2013 12:00

Sorry uniqlo code expired on 11th oct. Worth signing up to their newsletter and waiting a couple of weeks on the next one.

happygreeneggsandham · 15/10/2013 12:03

Thank you Ducky and Snowlie!

Nice! I have that H&M hat, from 2 winters ago, it has been worn to death and still looks fine. Given that it and the scarf are fairly cheap you might want to take a chance on them, then replace them if they do go bobbly? But honestly, mine really hasn't.
