Can you help me choose a 30s style veil for a wedding dress. And also tell me if you think I would look like a knob wearing one

I have namechanged as I am not sure of the ins and outs of my wedding plans and a bit worried that MNers I know will go 'oooooooh' when all I have are vague plans and an idea I would like to look a bit like Nancy Mitford on her wedding day.

I have bought a dress (I had to, it was forty quid). It is a ghost dress like this but has lacy cap sleeve not satin ones. It is here

www.ghost.co.uk/dye-to-order/sylvia-dress.html?color=46

Also I have seen a lovely veil www.etsy.com/uk/listing/97028065/silk-wedding-veil-and-art-deco-headpiece?ref=shop_home_active

The dress is in blush pink. You can get the veil and cap in pink as well. Will I look like a twat? I have NO idea about wedding style. Fwiw I am very tall and blonde, was thinking of having my hair shingled style as well. Can you advise me please?

Kate Moss's whole look was just the most stunning thing ever.

Side note: I loved Lily's bouquet!

buss · 12/10/2013 15:38

oooh yes do!

FaddyPeony · 12/10/2013 15:41

Yes do post a pic!

You can totally carry off the cap n' veil thing if you're tall.

GhastlyMoiraKroesig · 12/10/2013 15:43

Kate Moss looked so great.

What I loved about that is that she wore what suits her, she had about 26 bridesmaids (which I like to think she knew it would be a big deal so every young girl she knew she asked along as she knew that for years those girls could shriek about 'I was Kate Moss's bridesmaid!' which I think makes her sound rather sweet and LOOK how utterly overjoyed she looked. That Abbey crouch girl got married the same week and (although I think she is really sweet on strictly) her wedding looked really tacky and cynical in comparison.

I am, with moderate heels I am about 6 foot 3.

I always shy away from bias cut as I think it makes me look broad in the beam but that's only because I watched Hwat Not To Wear and Trinny Woddall said so.

Trinny always looks like a man in drag, so I wouldn't pay any attention...

I love the dress & the headpiece and I think if the latter could be dyed to match the dress then it could look great. If not I think it would be safer to stick with plain cream & a cream veil.

I think your hair could look great shingled.

GhastlyMoiraKroesig · 12/10/2013 16:20

God know where you would find a hairdresser who would shingle hair.

I would take in loads of pictures of society beauties from the early 30s or so, I would come out looking like Ivy Tilsley.

Love ALL of your styles you've posted OP - amazing.

Re: hairdo, what area are you in? I can highly recommend The Hepburn Collection for fantastic vintage hairdos - based in London but travel all over. I have no idea what they charge (only ever worked with them on styled shoots, not used them personally) but they are very good. Also Amanda at Lipstick & Curls is great for these styles. There are plenty of specialist stylists out there, you would get good recommendations and suggestions by posting on Vintage Life magazine's page on Facebook.

Twinklestein · 12/10/2013 16:34

Any decent hairdresser should be able to do it. Do you want a Marcel wave or straight?

GhastlyMoiraKroesig · 12/10/2013 16:40

I think trying to replicate a genuine 30z style would be a mistake as I would end up looking demented/like Christina Aguilera.

Something like this I was thinking www.style-hair-magazine.com/image-files/large-latest-hairstyles-5.jpg

But my hair is a big longer, but it could be pinned at the back or something.

Oh I don't bloody know.

Thanks so much emsyj for those ideas, I am only just over an hour outside London, that's great I will look a those thanks. I might get married in London anyway.

The dress in your op is exquisite and so is the veil. Personally I wouldn't have the veil in blush, I would have the blush dress and an ivory veil.

You will look like elegance personified. I am picturing you in the dress and veil as demure Veronica lake.

I love every single one of these and your dress is be au ti ful!!! You are going to look so lovely and I want to come to your wedding.

Well it appears that I really do like your dress. Grin (sorry)

ShoeWhore · 12/10/2013 21:36

Wow OP that dress and the veil you first linked to are both stunning! Love them both (and the shingled hair) and I think you are going to look amazing.

I think with a blush pink dress I would go for an ivory veil, fwiw.

GhastlyMoiraKroesig · 13/10/2013 15:41

Thank you very much everyone. I think I will either go for the veil linked in my first post or perhaps the one buss linked to.

Will try the dress on next week and will post, and will also go back to the shop and look at the ivory ones and post links to those styles (but I am not sure I look very good in white or ivory being very pale etc). I rarely wear pink but it is a couloir which suits my skin tone.

I am hopping to buy all my kit without venturing into bridal shops where they will compel me to try on a line strapless embroidered monstrosities Grin

Thanks for your help.
