Can I do a home-dye job on salon-highlighted hair?

I've had blonde highlights put through my dark brown hair (not sure why now) at the hairdressers......and I don't like it. It looks really stripy and greasy, even when freshly washed. It was a few weeks ago now so can't go back to fix it.

What would happen if I used a home dye kit to dye it back to my natural colour? Would it be a disaster and go orange/green?

Trying to avoid another visit to the salon if possible.

All suggestions welcome!

I have done this (more than once.. why do I never learn) and it IS possible..but I would test it out with a level 1 colour first ( 8 washes one) that way if it isn't great it will be out in a few scrubs!

I once slopped a level 2 colour over higlights and it wasn't pretty..I had to pay the hairdresser to make it look less patchy! But that might have just been me!

Don't go for any 'cool' colours like ash brown. Stick to warm browns.
I put an ash brown on highlighted hair once years ago and it turned a lovely shade of khaki green Grin

Khaki hair?? Arghhhhh - that's what I'm afraid of!

Ok I'm going to do it - semi-permanent dye in a warm brown shade.

Thank you Medusa and Twinkle..... will report back.

I've done it and it was fine - not as good as my original colour but didn't go green. I went for semi-permanent but can't remember shade as it was ages ago. I even used a cool, ash colour and it didn't go green (warm brown doesn't suit me).

I once got a hairdresser to dye over my highlights, thinking that would be better than a home job, and it went purple Hmm

Ooh good - success!
Maybe I'll do mine too. Fancy a nice red brown!
