Could we have a thread please about what clothes are stylish on a man?

I am not the most stylish or up to date woman but I recently feel I have made a real effort with my clothes and have moved out of the SAHM trap of wearing jeans and baggy tops every day. I now want to work on dh's style (and he wants me to, before I am told to leave the poor guy alone!) but I don't really know what sorts of things he could wear. Trips to the shops don't yield anything - there is hardly any choice or variety at all!

So, what we are after is ideas for casual wear about the house and also something slightly smarter, eg for special family get togethers or eating out.

He currently wears a lot of fleeces (we are outdoorsy types and they are obviously appropriate for the tops of mountains but I am sick of them in the house/on the street) walking trousers (ditto) and walking trainers on his feet. I know, it sounds grim.

So any ideas for giving him a bit of a style boost? He is mid 40s btw. Has put on some middle aged spread lately but is not badly overweight - about 36 inch waist I think? Visual examples would be great.

You can get cord jeans on Boden for £50 link

Just don't let him see the plain pull-ons!

And also ebay: Wrangler jean cords

How is his figure like? Some stylish things, e.g. skinny jeans, might look good on tall and slim 20-something rock band members, but do not suit most men. Anyway, agree you should drop the fleece. Probably the worst thing on a man because they are so unshapely.

Casual wear:

  • Jeans
  • Slightly fitted T-shirt/Polos
  • Shawl cardigan / pullover
  • Smart trainers (not running/colourful ones)

Smart casual:

  • Trousers/Jeans
  • Slightly fitted T-shirt/Polos/Shirt
  • Blazer (can make even T-shirts look smart)
  • Loafers

My DH is very classic - he's quite tweedy and staid, so I would love him to be slightly more on trend. He is stylish and always wears well cut clothes though, so I'd never suggest he changes.
I think I should have married a rock star not a vet. Hmm

Merrills type leather/suede walking shoe in brown or grey with those squarish toes.

blue jeans. snug fit but not droopy arse. or charcoal grey cargo pant type things with pockets agogo.

shirt of whatever pattern you fancy, excepting perhaps hawaiian.

darker v neck jumper to disguise middle age spread. Maybe brownish, maybe greyish purplish this should tie in with choice of shoe colour and whether blue jeans or grey trousers.

or long sleeve plain t-shirt with checked shirt over it. the shirt should be fitted, ie have darts in the back.
