I love the feel of leggings, but hate the Beaded/Knitted Tunic thing…so what do you wear over leggings?!

Leggings feel great on…all tight and warm. I like the thought of wearing longish boots over them in winter. But I'm not about to have my arse showing in them though so what the hell do I wear over them?!

Has anybody got any stylish suggestions?

The tunic approach of White Stuff and Joe Brown's is not to my taste and I don't like the beady, hippy kaftan business of Monsoon. I'm not very girly so a dress just feels wrong. Something plain of colour maybe, or a long denim-shirt type thing maybe.

There are a lot of threads about finding decent leggings…I just want to know what you lot wear them with them??

I'm 5ft 7 by the way, and size 12-14 if that makes a difference...

Marking my place as I really haven't a clue

Spookey80 · 27/09/2013 19:27

I often wear leggings with dresses as an alternative to tights.
I would never wear leggings with my bum showing.
At the moment I am quite into those tube skirts and wear them with leggings and boots/pumps. I don't wear them with a tight top, a looser jumper or something like that?
Love my leggings!

offtogetmesomebrains · 27/09/2013 19:31

Spookey what kind of dresses do you wear? If they're of the floaty variety that would be too girly for me, but if they're more solid could you give me an idea of where to get them?

I wear tea dresses with mine, they're about mud thigh.

juneybean · 27/09/2013 19:33

gettingtogrips · 27/09/2013 19:33

For 'solid' dresses, have you looked at 'White Company'?

dexter73 · 27/09/2013 19:34

I would wear a long jumper if I was going to wear leggings.

littlemisswise · 27/09/2013 19:35

I like a long jumper or a knitted dress if it is really cold.

offtogetmesomebrains · 27/09/2013 19:40

Like this kind of long jumper from White Company?

Or something lighter like this from White Company?

Would those look alright?

I wear dresses that I consider to be too short, especially for daywear, I'm 5ft 8 - anything from hush hits mid thigh. Have a stripy Breton style jersey dress I wear with leggings. Thinking about it only knits and jersey, so comfy I might as well be wearing trousers.

MissOtisRegretsMadam · 27/09/2013 19:49

Chunky knit long slouchy cardigan? Batwing long jumper?

SundaySimmons · 27/09/2013 19:52

I bought this today to wear with leggings.

It looks much much better than the pictures and the touch of angora makes it feel very soft.

Bargain price too!

These look nice from Hush 1

and Hush 2...

Yes those ones from the White Company would go nicely, I usually hate dresses too, but somehow with leggings and a calf length dress I can convince myself that I'm really wearing trousers and an extra long top!

snowlie · 27/09/2013 19:55

I like the first white company dress, less keen on the second.

onlysettleforbutterflies · 27/09/2013 19:57

I wear a long line vest to cover my bum and a shorter top over the top or a shirt.

offtogetmesomebrains · 27/09/2013 20:03

So knitted jumpery things seem to be the way to go, yes?

I looked into tea dresses as per juneybean's suggestions but they tend too much to the feminine. I'm just not very girly of character so I'd feel a fraud in those. These looked ok-ish though do you think?

My favourite leggings outfit at the moment is leggings, knee length boots, white t-shirt and denim shirt over it and belt if I am feeling slim.

Here are some Pinterest ideas.

Okay but nothing too exciting.

Some nice ideas except for the hideous electric blue top.

Especially love the green outfit with tan belt and boots.

I've just bought this with the grazia 25% off code -WH25AW13

CoTananat · 28/09/2013 07:07

I wear these lots for lazy leggingy days. Also a tweed long pencil skirt from Monsoon, they do a version most years, with big socks and a shirred waist jumper. I've got a black wool kilt from, hm, Whistles, that is sort of knitted, oh and also a knitted tube skirt with a fair isle pattern round the bottom.

So basically lots of texture and knit. No tunics for me. They make me look like a barrel.

I am definitely getting a kilt this year. I have visions of flippy pleats and cowl necked jumpers and spaniels...

oohdaddypig · 28/09/2013 07:23

Love lots of these suggestions.

I sometimes wear my leggings in winter with a mini cord skirt - the leggings make it less tarty - and top half can be a chunky cardi. Totally avoids the whole tunic issue...

Love that hush stuff.

Does matalan stuff wash OK?

InMySpareTime · 28/09/2013 07:58

I wear shorts over leggings, I got some pinstripe ones that are quite loose fitting from the charity shop and wear whatever I like on top, usually a top with an open shirt over, or a loose short jumper.

snowlie · 28/09/2013 08:40

I have a cotton Hush Henley dress that looks great over leggings - until I sit down, then I get a baggy arse which doesn't look so great - is it me, is my arse too big, is it the cotton or is it the lack of Lycra?
