Hair salons in York - any recommendations?

It's time for a change. Not really happy with the last 2 or 3 cuts I've had. Anyone got any recommendations for hairdressers in York? Thank you

Bang on petergate. Adele is great or Matt. All great really x

Tbh I would go to Leeds and go to West Row. Either of the city centre shops. You can go with someone junior and have a really good cut and colour and not too expensive. Have tried most in York and found mainly they have one person who is good and the rest aren't! Janine and Charlotte are great. Others too but much more £££.

I go to Rachel at West Row in York, and would really recommend her, she is great at colour and cuts. Last time I came out, three people on the street asked me where I had my hair done ( I think hope they liked it, rather than finding out where to avoid!!) That sort of thing genuinely never happens to me, I felt all swishy and fabulous all the way home Grin
I travel from Leeds to go there

Never tried west row in York but there you go - go to west row!

WhatNo · 26/09/2013 22:54

That's great. Thank you. I'll cancel my next appointment at regular place and have a look at your recommendations. Bang has always looked quite funky (word that dates me) - will they cope with mid forties slightly mumsy type?! Like the idea of swishy, admired hair. Mine is neither :(

My current salon is smart and expensive (well I think so!) but she uses thining scissors - that's not good is it? Or have we come full circle and they are the new must haves of the hairdressing world? Just seems like she hacks randomly and bits fall off. Doesn't seem very precise.

Thanks for suggestions.

Jane at fifty50 is amazing

Madratlady · 27/09/2013 00:03

Another vote here for Bang, it's pricey but they I've always been really happy with my haircuts there. I usually go to Adele.

They won't judge you on being 40 either, that's hardly old!

mamayaya · 27/09/2013 08:16

Jane at fifty50 is great I second that. I had not great cuts and colours from two others there though so would only see Jane there.

Didn't West Row in York close? I went there a couple of time but stopped after they cut my hair and it wasn't straight.......

I've been to Michael Andrew a few times but it's very expensive and they made me cross when I booked two parallel appointments for me and dd3. So we could have our hair cut at the same time - taking about 45 minutes. When I got there my hairdresser said they would do both of us - not in parallel obviously so it took twice as long. Nice cut but I think it was £75 for dd and I and it took ages.
Then I tried the salon in Browns. Again an ok cut BUT they kept me waiting nearly an hour and then took over an hour to do the cut. I was worn out by the time I got out.
Today I needed a cut and left it late to think about where to go so I'm gong back to Saks and seeing the principal there. Will report back......

northernlurker · 27/09/2013 18:19

Reporting back - v happy with my cut by Michelle at Saks.

WhatNo · 27/09/2013 18:54

Thanks NL for Saks update. I too thought West Row had shut - isn't it now part of the traditional stylee Gentleman's Outfitters that was next door? I'll google - maybe it's moved.
I've tried the one in Browns too. Went a few times. OK but wasn't blown away.
Hair looking awful so need to bite bullet and book somewhere.

Apparently West Row's moved not closed - don't know where to though.

Ginismyfriend · 27/09/2013 19:01

I second Michelle at Saks! Also Claire. Had a fab cut and colour there this week.

northernlurker · 27/09/2013 19:06

If it's the same Claire she cut my hair so well years ago for a very posh night out that I got pregnant! Grin

WhatNo · 27/09/2013 19:15

Blimey - hope that doesn't happen! :)

My mum and mother in law go to bang - a real range of people and certainly not so trendy you'd feel uncomfortable. I'm a 35 mum of 2 - hardly a trendsetter!!!

cathyandclaire · 28/09/2013 18:59

West Row moved, still open but now in the road behind Hoopers, near the Mulberry Outlet :)
