What do I wear on my legs with this sort of skirt?

I live in jeans, dresses are for dressy with nude tights and smart shoes, but I want try something different.

Given that I usually wear this sort of shoe or trainers, what should I wear on my legs with this sort of pencil skirt?

I'm a size 16, so not as leggy and neat-waisted as that model!

knee high boots and opaques? opaques and chelsea boots?

ILoveAFullFridge · 14/09/2013 08:22

I have a pair of knee-highs, so that's good!

Not so sure about size 7.5 flat Chelsea boots on the end of short, wide legs. Might that not make me look a bit like a Narnisn Dufflepud?

What about clumpy shoes that end on the ankle, like these, say?

When you say opaques, do you mean grown-up nylon tights style, or schoolgirl thick wooly/cotton-rich tights style? Plain, presumably? Any colour, or should I stick to black?

I'd wear loafers or ankle boots with opaque tights.

I think coloured nylon opaques would be good with denim skirt - nice thing about denim is that it goes with everything so you don't have to stick with yawnsome black.

Pretty much anything in this list (hope that works) would be a classic / very predictable and dull choice with a denim skirt.

Happy to stick with predictable and dull classic until I get used to having my knees on display Grin.

How old are you btw OP?

PostmanPatAlwaysRingsTwice · 14/09/2013 09:08

I have a similar skirt and wear it with black opaques (but am going to get some dark coloured e.g. grey wool tights) and these boots.

Clearly I am no fashion icon but I think it looks ok.

PostmanPatAlwaysRingsTwice · 14/09/2013 09:11

I also wear it with bare legs and wedge sandals in the summer or with tights and these cowboyish heeled ankle boots

MissDD1971 · 14/09/2013 11:53

You could always wear mid calf boots. I saw a nice heeled slouch pair by Head Over Heels.

Also black leather buckled mid calf (flat) with sheepskin or faux SS from Dune

Depends on your legs! Do you have lovely slim ankles? In which case show them off by wearing tights and shoes. If less so, then go for boots. A slouchy pair will make wide calves appear wider though, so you might be better going for a fitted look if this is a problem. Bear in mind that where you put a break the brain creates a line, so you want to do this at your slimmest points (contrasting tights colours for instance only when achieving this, if wearing something which breaks less kindly try and coordinate tights and shoes eg black with black so the join is less noticeable).

I am also a size 16 and have a similar denim skirt but slightly shorter - it is probably the most worn item in my wardrobe whateer the season!!

In winter, I wear it with wooly ribbed tights and long biker-type boots (will try and link in a mo). In summer, I have bare legs and flip-flops for casual occasions and wedges for more formal occasions. I also wear it with Converse pumps (not high tops) if it is raining or I am doing a lot of walking.

It will be a great investment Grin

ILoveAFullFridge · 14/09/2013 14:50

I'm in my late forties. My ankles (how shall I put this kindly?) only look slim relative to my lovely chunky calves and knees Grin. I don't think I have particularly fat legs, but I generally need wider width knee boots.

Thanks for the advice about contrasting colours at break points. It seems to me that just about anything goes, but I had my doubts about calf-height boots precisely because of my chunky calves.

I tried the skirt with nude tights and then with red opaques. What a difference! Chunky shoes looked dreadful with nudes, but fine with the opaques.

It's very difficult to get an idea of what will work from published pictures, because they're all of young, leggy things.

Personally, if my legs were not that slim, I'd stick with black opaques (well, I do anyway) as why draw attention to them by wearing coloured tights? I wear about a 70 to 100 denier black opaque. Nude tights are not really that flattering.
you might just need to wear your skirt out and go and try on some shoes until you find what works for you, good luck
