what is the sizing like? I am a size ten on top, if not a size 8, but a size ten or 12 on the bottom half. Usually a size 12 coat would be too big, Merrell have xs, s, m... I think the hip measurements for small are 37-38 and I would be a 38 and a half, just measured.... so although the FACTS would tell me to go for medium, it's not like a dress is it, they always give a few spare inches and I like things on the fitted side really. As I'm short, loose clothes make me look heavier than fitted clothes.

Any advice!? Appreciate any comments.

ps, do you think a bob the builder measuring tape is accurate?!

Just noticed that on the American website a medium is an 8-10 which would be our 12-14? is that right. it's hard to know whether their size ten is one or two sizes smaller than ours.

I am a size 10 on top and an 8-10 on the bottom, I have a Haven in the XS. It is snug fitting, but fits. I would maybe go for the S if I were you?

Zoe789 · 11/09/2013 11:40

Thanks that is really helpful!

I am a size 10 all over and thought I would be an exact size S in merrell coats. However I bought an ellenwood and a haven in the sales this summer and found that I preferred the xs in the ellenwood as it gave it a more fitted look. The S was a bit baggier on me at the back but may be ideal for you if you are a 10-12?

The haven in a S was way too short on the sleeves because it's quite padded and I'm 5'7". I ended up changing it for a M which I much prefer. It's such a pain as it's hard to find them in the shops to try on but they have some online with Blacks so I ordered from them initially and then could return them to the store free of charge.

Let me know if you want me to measure either of them, the sleeve length was something I didn't expect to be so different!

Zoe789 · 11/09/2013 12:05

thanks, I do like a fitted look but I am probably an inch or two wider at the hips. Can you measure the inside of the coats for me Grin that would be great! eg they say the xs is 34-35 hips and the s is 37-38, is that the length of the coat itself around the hips or is it what the recommend you buy? coat manufacturers usually recommend a roomier fit that I like.

Zoe789 · 11/09/2013 12:06

sorry, they say the S is 36-37 around the hips.

I'm a very similar size to you OP. I have merrell wakefield in an S. The hip section is, if I'm honest, too narrow but because it has a double zip I unzip the bottom a bit so its comfy and I can stride when I walk. The top half fits nicely and can accommodate a cardi/woolly underneath.

NorthPolo · 11/09/2013 23:05

This measuring thing is trickier than I thought, especially with a bog standard tape measure! I have measured the ellenwood and the xs is 34-35 a few inches below the middle of the waistband where the adjustable draw cord is. On me this is the top of my hip bones but if you're a few inches shorter than me (I'm 5'7) then the measurements merrell give are correct.

I have checked my widest measurement and it's roughly 38 but the jacket flares out slightly as it goes down which I think is how I have managed to squeeze into the smaller size. It's the insulated version and there is no space for a cardigan or jumper, I bought the haven for colder days. I would say the small would be the safest bet but the cuff to the underarm seam is 20" so be aware the sleeves are quite long.

I'll compare the haven tomorrow if you want? You are probably a small in that too as the only reason I sized up was to get the extra material to get the longer sleeves so I wasn't cold. I did prefer the look of the small, it was more fitted.

I had a Wakefield in Large & have lost 3st & have just received my order of the Ellenwood (Wakefield replacement) in XS & it a nice fit. I think they are on the generous side but are fab hence why I have had to get another!

WillieWaggledagger · 12/09/2013 09:07

i am a 10-12 and have the haven in a M which is frankly too big but it means i can fit a bodywarmer underneath if i need to (i stand beside quite a few freezing rugby pitches)

PrimalLass · 12/09/2013 10:13

I am a 14 and have the Kedzie in M. It is a teeny bit nippit around the middle but is a very fitted style.

DuvetHog · 12/09/2013 10:36

This is really cheeky but if anyone is wanting to buy a Preloved but good condition Wakefield then PM me as I'll be sticking it on eBay soon :-) Sorry OP for hijacking!

Zoe789 · 12/09/2013 13:05

thank you northpolo! I appreciate that. that is a problem for me being small, even if the hip width allowed in the coat is right, if the waist of the coat is closer to my hips than my waist then I just can't do it up! and a size up would look like I had a marquee on .
I'm not sure about other posters, but I wouldn't order the haven as it's too short. pity it's so short as I like the duffle style.

CointreauVersial · 12/09/2013 23:05

I'm size 10 and have a Wakefield Size S which fits perfectly.

TheBuskersDog · 12/09/2013 23:32

I'm 5'4" size 8 and have the Ellenwood in xs, it fits well with room for a jumper but not baggy.

Zoe789 · 13/09/2013 11:06

Thank you very much! If you have a measuring tape could you do me a favour and see how many inches from the top of the coat the waist falls?

I realise that finding a measuring tape could be a big job though, so don't go searching for one !

OP posts:
NorthPolo · 16/09/2013 17:58

The middle of the back of the coat is 16" from the seam where the coat hook bit is (collar is extra on top of that but folds over). That's down to the draw cord seam then there is another 3 or 4 inches and you get the measurement of 34-35 that merrell give for the hip width.

Zoe678 · 16/09/2013 19:48

Thanks a million! That will help me decide if it would fit or not.

abc12345 · 19/09/2013 10:54

Where have you found your elenwood/ Wakefield? I'm desperately looking for one in medium preferably in red but it seems impossible!! Xx

NorthPolo · 21/09/2013 10:54

I got mine from field and trek in the summer but blacks also do them. The colours seem to have changed now but don't think I've seen a red one...?

Cheltrach75 · 13/10/2013 13:21

Hi, posted this in a different thread too, but this is a more recent one, so.... I'm looking at the Merrell Ellenwood online, and trying to work out what colour the Conifer Heather actually is. Anyone know? It looks blue on my computer but I don't know how accurate that is. Thanks so much.

TripTrapTripTrapOverTheBridge · 24/10/2013 18:03

Does anyone have the Geraldine?I'm tempted by one but considering the Ellenwood too.How are they for nipping in at the waist and how 'thick' are they?
