Where can I get an evening dress on a tiny budget?

VelvetSpoon · 28/08/2013 18:42

All my dresses are too big (could get them taken in but not sure I have time/ know anyone capable).

Budget is under £100 (preferably under £50).

Colleague mentioned a place she's got her dress from which I think she found via facebook - I stupidly didn't write it down and now she's on holiday for 2 weeks (party is in 3) so desperate for other ideas...!

Have you looked on eBay?

GiraffesMum · 28/08/2013 18:47

Tk maxx or look and see if you have any dress exchange shops nearby (think they'd be listed in the yellow pages).

CMOTDibbler · 28/08/2013 18:49

ebay - theres always loads on there, and they are great value

Youhaventseenme · 28/08/2013 18:49

Have a look at Debenhams website.

VelvetSpoon · 28/08/2013 18:51

I did think of ebay but what would worry me is time (given how close to the event it is) and whether or not it would fit, as I am slightly between sizes. I can foresee me buying something and either it not arriving in time, or being too big/ small and me ending up with even less time to get anything!

(My fault for leaving this to last min)

Our tk maxx is crap and never has anything evening-y. Will look up dress exchanges though and see if there are any nearby :)

Tk maxx.online

Go to a posh part of your town and do a quick trawl of the charity shops and any dress agencies. If ebay, ask for precise measurements & check against a dress that fits you, or choose a dress that is not too closely fitted. Quite often shortening shoulder straps makes a world of difference.

I have a lovely NEXT black lace dress I found in Scope once.

Monsoon? I bought a dress for a wedding there today for £80 and they seemed to have their new lines in.

MissFenella · 28/08/2013 20:31

Phase eight? they are generous fit so you could go down a size.

BeaLola · 28/08/2013 21:03

I would try Monsoon as they have wide choice

A friend - me and best friend tend to borrow from each other & then spend budget on shoes and accessories.

lborolass · 28/08/2013 21:05

There was something on TV earlier this week about places you can rent posh dresses, I'm sure the prices they showed were under £50. I'll see if I can find a link.

lborolass · 28/08/2013 21:07

This is it, I think there's an under £50 section

PeerMon · 28/08/2013 21:12

What size and style are you looking for?

Slavetominidictator · 28/08/2013 21:35

ASOS - online?

VelvetSpoon · 28/08/2013 22:00

Thanks for all the suggestions!

I am a 14, possibly 16 depending on cut. Dress needs to be long, but I don't mind the cut (I can't do anything clingy round the stomach though).

Will have a look at Monsoon, although I know the dresses I tend to like in there are usually well over £150!
