My search for a red lipstick appears to be over

After three hours in town on Saturday trying on as many reds as I could find and sorely testing the patience of about three very helpful shop assistants, I think I've found a red lipstick that I like and that doesn't make me look like a raddled old hag!

Interestingly, all three SAs and my very high fashion friend (who I dragged along with me on my quest) thought I would definitely suit a blue red. However, I hated them all and everyone agreed that they were nothing special and conceded that they actually did make me look quite old and 'hard'.

I tried:

Mac
Lady Bug
Mac Red
Russian Red
Ruby Woo
Brave Red
Cockney
Chilli
Dubbonet
Everyday Diva

Revlon
Revlon Red
True Red
Really Red

Max Factor
Ruby Tuesday

Clinique
Red-y To Wear

Chanel
102
104
105
98
99

Yes, I went through a lot of wet wipes! I ended up with Chanel Rouge Allure in 97 Incandescente which is an orangey red. Everyone loved it, me included.

Apologies for this very long, boring post, but I'm very happy Grin [shallow]

A warmer red is good with a tan.
I save the blue reds for winter.
Have been wearing Revlon Romantic almost every single day this summer.
I just bought Lipstick Queen Medieval - which is blue based but sheer
And am very tempted by Chanel Dialogue, which is a fuchsia red, sheer again but more pigmented than the early Coco Shines.

SorrelForbes · 19/08/2013 15:37

I definitely haven't got a tan. I am very pale with an olive/yellow tinge, green eyes and mid brown hair.

I can't find Revlon Romantic on-line. Has it been discontinued?

I'm very similar to you, except I tan easily.
Pale olive -yellow skin in winter.
Not sure about Romantic, only got it in May I think.

SorrelForbes · 19/08/2013 16:01

Actually, thinking about it, I do tan (when given the bloody opportunity and some sun!) very easily.

I also have Mac Lady Danger which I bought in the Duty Free at JFK when drunk and although it's too bright for every day it's still a better shade than everything I tried on Saturday!

Another one to try is Nars Gypsy.
Very easy flattering red.
Not blue at all.

SorrelForbes · 19/08/2013 16:14

The Nars Gypsy looks a bit of a pinky red but it's hard to tell on a PC monitor! I have the Revlon Lip Butter in Candy Apple and it's Ok I suppose but again, I think it looks really 'old' on me.

Ooh Rimmel lipstick shade: Alarm, is the red I always use! I'm glad you found one you love too :-)

SorrelForbes · 19/08/2013 16:32

I shall add Alarm and Gypsy to my list to try, thanks!

Candy Apple does nothing for me. I bought it, but as soon as I put it on it just looks wrong and I end up taking it off. Useless.
tan or not.
Gypsy is a nude red. Very easy.

schmalex · 19/08/2013 18:41

I think the trick is to try a warm red and a cool red and see which suits best. I always thought I was better in cool reds because I'm pale with dark hair, but red lipstick never looked right. Since I had my colours done I've discovered I suit warm colours much better and I look great in a tomatoey shade.

SorrelForbes · 19/08/2013 18:46

Yes, exactly, and that's what I'd been doing on and off for about a year Grin. Saturday was a last ditch attempt to find one, just one, lipstick that didn't make me look like a 70 year old drag queen. It paid off and I'm happy although my lips were a little sore yesterday!

I've got Chanel La Fascinante and I love it! Wearing it always makes me feel very grown up. Never got on with MAC reds although I've got lots of MAC nudes / nearly nudes, all of which are lovely (Velvet Teddy and Hot Gossip, fwiw)

Pinupgirl · 19/08/2013 20:11

The Revlon romantic is one of the lip balm ones-the chubby stick rip offs. I love it-I am blonde and I also find all reds look too harsh on me.

I wear romantic for day and for going out I use the Mua red lipliner all over my lips with a tiny bit of clear lip gloss over the top to stop it being so dry-looks great and stays on all night!

sophiedaal · 19/08/2013 22:29

I have millions of nearly identical red lipsticks - it's the only colour I wear (very pale redhead). I thought my fave was MyFace Bleeding Love, just as it was discontinued. But they're all getting junked for Soap & Glory's Mantrap. A beautiful, flattering, long lasting colour.

ClaraDeLaNoche · 19/08/2013 22:36

Sorrell my friend any recommendations for a bluey based winter one?

SorrelForbes · 19/08/2013 23:00

Oh no, sorry, I tried loads but can't remember much about them apart from they looked crap on me!

Ask me one about bras Grin

ClaraDeLaNoche · 20/08/2013 07:58
