Coats to wear with dresses

I've finally broken out of my usual work-wear trouser suit and top comfort zone and bought some dresses to wear to work . But I have no idea what sort of coat to wear? All mine are short/3 quarter length. Do people still wear full length coats with dresses or is 3/4 ok? Was planning to wear the dresses with long boots /suit jacket or maybe a cardi in winter . Thanks.

I find a classic trench coat a great staple for wearing with dresses. I live in a rainy part if the country and get at leadt 3 seasons wear out of mine.

Mine sits just on the knee and I always think it lioks just as good with jeans and flats as with dresses and heels.

I have a wool coat for winter workwear once it's too cold for my trench.
