40+ - where to you buy clothes?

Just wondering where other ladies 40+ buy their clothes. I tend to buy mine from M&S and Next, simply because I can easily order online and also they are close to the bus stop (I don't normally have much time after I've got things for everyone else - guess we all know this one!).

Anyway, have been feeling like I need a fashion/style update for a year or two now, and it's just hit me I have £500 in my account (haven't spent much money this year), so I'm ready to hit the shops after the school holidays. Still like M&S and Next, but would like to look somewhere else but don't know where!

I get my clothes from (in no particular order!)-

Gap
Levis
Monsoon
Whistles
Uniqlo
Zara
Phase Eight
Fat Face
Hobbs
John Lewis
Warehouse
Oasis
TK Maxx
Barbour

That's all I can think of for now. Basically I shop wherever I see clothes I like!

TheFallenMadonna · 15/08/2013 15:18

I tend to use John Lewis for ordering online as they have loads of brands: Whistles, Mango and Mint Velvet, Hobbs and LK Bennett for work.

That said, today I am wearing Boden jeans and a Zara top.

missbopeep · 15/08/2013 15:39

there are loads of threads about this including one at the moment for 50+ women.

I buy anywhere and everywhere but never M&S or Next.

TeddyPickleStick · 15/08/2013 15:45

The same places I always have

Seriously, no need to turn 40 and suddenly think ' oh I must start shopping at M and S now.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 15/08/2013 16:13

I can't stand Next, but get some bits (a few pairs of jeans and t-shirts, the occasional jumper and all knickers) from M&S.

Today I'm wearing - Topshop jeans, Clarks ballet shoes, Gap silk camisole (v old) and Whistles jacket. I buy from a number of places, though tend to wait for sales in the more expensive ones.

Topshop, M&S, Oasis - jeans
Topshop - jersey tube skirts
Warehouse and Oasis are good for well-priced leather jackets
Hobbs, M&S - t-shirts
Warehouse - silk tops (but getting more and more rare)
Hobbs- sale jackets for work
White Company - jersey dresses and nightwear (but their dress range is crap at the moment)
Whistles sales - have got some gorgeous things there lately but the sizing is a bit bonkers

insancerre · 15/08/2013 16:16

anyway really, the same as when I wasn't 40+
Tk Maxx
New Look
Primark
ASOS
matalan
never shopped at next or M&S

orangeandemons · 15/08/2013 16:17

I tend to avoid, M and S, Next, And Debenhams, particularly Next. Anywhere else is Ok

missbopeep · 15/08/2013 16:23

Ok today ( and am more than 40)

Uniqlo straight jeans, dark wash ( almost skinny)
Boden T shirt- white
Jigsaw jacket- dark charcoal jersey, boxy and fitted.
Purple satin plimsolls like converse
Tan belt on jeans

Toast sale

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 15/08/2013 16:30

I forgot Cos. A lot of their stuff is shapeless and ugly but they have a few really good things.

itsBeer0cl0ck · 15/08/2013 17:23

I can't buy anything in next.

I go in to the big department stores and just buy what I like if the price doesn't horrify me.

Arisbottle · 15/08/2013 17:26

Hobbs
LK Bennett
Top shop
Cos
Phase Eight
Vivienne Westwood
Joules
Monsoon

DontActuallyLikePrunes · 15/08/2013 17:27

Seasalt

TeddyPickleStick · 15/08/2013 17:29

I quite like H & M for basic little dresses and uniqlo for jeans

knickernicker · 15/08/2013 17:30

Remus I'd probably like to dress like you but I bet your tallish. Where can short people shop?

Mumof3wifeof1 · 15/08/2013 17:42

Dorothy Perkins !!!! I promise you won't be the oldest in the store, and it's not too young. I just don't want to look like mutton dressed as lamb but I don't want to look like I've got one foot in the grave either at 40 plus

Obviously some stuff is too young but look at the sales assistants, some of the, are 40 plus and they wear dp clothes and look fab

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 15/08/2013 19:19

Knicker - I'm a short-arse. I'm 5'2 and a size 12.

Agree with Arisbothe re Westwood. I only have 4 items but I adore them all and they have more than paid for themselves on a cost per wear basis (were all sale buys).
