Does your natural hair colour suit you?

I was just idly thinking about this - surely Mother Nature should provide us with hair/eye/skin colours that just automatically work?

I was blonde when I was little. I have very fair skin and blue eyes. I highlighted my hair from the age of 15 to the age of 30, when I had DC2 and couldn't cope with the expense/faff/roots any more. Turns out I have brown hair.

So I've had brown hair for 4 years now, my completely natural colour (plus about 8 greys, not bad so far!) It's a perfectly fine hair colour BUT given my extreme paleness, if I forget the blusher people ask me if I'm feeling OK! So my natural hair colour doesn't do much for me at all Confused.

I wonder how many of us have undyed hair. And why don't as many men dye their hair? (To change the colour, I mean, not to cover grey).

I suspect I'm missing being a blonde. Should I hit the bottle again or stick with what I've got?

I've never dyed my hair. I'm 30, blue eyes and fair skin. I have medium blonde hair and I think that suits me. It tends to get lighter in the summer.

When I was a teenager and all of the other girls in my class were dying their hair, I wanted to dye mine too - but my mum wouldn't allow it (because of the chemicals).

If you miss being a blonde, go for it!

I'm planning to go back to my natural colour on Saturday, from blonde. Have done it before and hated it so went back to blonde. I'm just fed up of roots and with young kids it is hard to keep it in good order.
I posted a pic of what I'm going for on my thread that I added today. I'm planning for a dark blonde with some very fine highlights to make it an easier transition. Could you maybe get some fine hi lights to liven it up a bit as an inbetween?

Never coloured but I love red hair. If I could be any red head Nicole Kidmans hair I love it, but then im biased i like her as an actress too. Also like the red head in neighbours summer i think? been long time since i watched it, saddo lol.But I'm Asian so that shade wouldn't suit my complexion I'd need a darker red. Still better than no red.

I'm too scared maybe when I get lots of grey hair until then black hair or very dark brown hair is my natural colour. Yes suits me i suppose but then I've never been any other shade so I would say that right?

Sis said hair dying a big hassle and expense, so I'm avoiding it for as long as possible.

Kezztrel · 13/08/2013 20:41

Yes it does, it's darkish brown - a dull ashy brown rather than rich chestnut, but I've tried putting warmer tones in it and it doesn't look good. Also tried highlights to brighten it up, which looked crap.

frogspoon · 13/08/2013 21:04

I look much better with highlighted hair.

I have extremely pale skin, and very dark brown (almost black) hair. The contrast is too great. Highlights (usually reddish brown/copper, or caramel/light brown) helps to bring it to a lighter shade that suits my skin tone better.

IHeartKingThistle · 13/08/2013 21:42

Ooh a mixed response! I think I made a much better blonde than I do a brunette (or is that just because I was in my 20s? Grin). But I might be too lazy to maintain it properly!

I also wonder how much of this is dictated by fashion - a tan is valued more than very pale skin, so maybe we try to reduce the contrast between skin/hair? But alabaster skin / dark hair / red lips is a classic retro look. Maybe I should dye it black!

I've only recently embraced the contrast between my v pale skin and dark hair and it def looks better than all my previous dye jobs. Bright blusher and lips help - but that's hardly going with what nature gave me is it Grin

TheYamiOfYawn · 13/08/2013 22:21

My natural hair colour is a sort of mousy colour and it doesn't suit me at all. I look much better with some highlights, taking it to a richer dark blonde. It isn't a big difference in terms of light/dark, but it is enough to make me look less ill.

I have pale skin, very pale lips, fair eyebrows and grey/blue eyes. With my natural hair colour, I look as though someone has taken a colour photograph and taken most of the colour out.

Notupduffedatpresent · 13/08/2013 22:22

Yes, I'm a redhead and anything else looks awful. I have finally had to admit defeat and learn to love my hair -attempts to dull it down to brown make me look washed out, and blonde highlights just look stripy in a Geri Halliwell circa 1996 sort of way. Ironically, having spent years trying to get rid of my red hair, now that I'm getting a few greys I'm preoccupied with trying to find a dye that matches it exactly!

AlwaysSleepingBeauty · 13/08/2013 22:27

I have naturally blonde hair and don't dye, I have a similar colouring to Amanda Seyfried and think it probably suits me best. I love other colours on other people though, especially red like Christina Hendricks.

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 13/08/2013 22:27

Yes it does suit me.

I am v.lucky though and have fab hair. It is a lovely chestnut and has natural honey/chocolate bits depending on the season/weather etc. I have a handful of greys now, I'm 36, but I won't ever colour it because the tones I have suit my skin so well.

ImATotJeSuisUneTot · 13/08/2013 22:38

Yes, but its so dull. Its a really boring shade of really dark brown, not a rich chocolate or anything remotely attractive and with no tones or highlights at all. A sheet of shit colour.

I've been colouring it since i was 14. Grin

SupermansBigRedPants · 13/08/2013 22:44

Not at all .. I was natural light blonde then went mousey blonde/brown and it was ugly! I've got pasty white skin I looked washed out without blusher even when I've dyed it to my original colour. It's now a rich brown which I actually suit :)

SwedishEdith · 13/08/2013 22:46

My natural colour now is very grey and, no, it doesn't suit my skin tone at all (pale). It's original colour was a chestnutty/auburn colour and I need the darker colour for contrast with the skin.

scarlet76 · 13/08/2013 23:03

Naturally dark brown hair he but around 40% grey now at 37. I think the grey is awful on me and so for the past 8 years I was highlighted blonde to varying degrees. A couple of months ago I felt the 6 weekly trips to the hairdresser were time consuming and costly and so I went back to my dark brown using a DIY hair colouring kit. It to was a shocker at first but the hair general consensus is that it suits.

IHeartKingThistle · 13/08/2013 23:08

Very interesting!

Yami I feel your pain re: pale lips!

MimsyBorogroves · 13/08/2013 23:14

Mine's naturally blonde. It really doesn't suit me.

I dye it red, 'tis much better.

DontCallMeBaby · 13/08/2013 23:15

I'm not sure - I've dyed it for 25 years, bar when pregnant with DD, and have given up doing so. I last dyed it in December and it's only in the last month people have commented, even though I used to dye it purple! It's the darker end of mouse, with some grey - I like it at the moment as the dyed ends have faded out to quite a blonde shade, it looks like it's been dip dyed. Of course that won't last. One thing I did notice, I was trying on glasses (I don't wear them, but DD does, so I spend time being bored in opticians!), and the dark, heavy frames that suited me with purple hair really didn't any more.

mrsyattering · 13/08/2013 23:16

I stopped highlighting mine over 10 years ago, I'm dark blonde/very light brown with lots of white (natural highlights Wink) I have blue eyes, I think it suits me, and am 40 this year.

IHeartKingThistle · 13/08/2013 23:17

DD would love it if I went purple!

DH would go purple Grin

What, mouse brown interspersed with grey? No, doesn't suit me at all. It's currently a lovely copper courtesy of nice n' easy!

Kezztrel · 13/08/2013 23:35

My lips are really pale now I'm in my 30s - they used to be much rosier. This is why God gave us lipstick.

ShoeWhore · 13/08/2013 23:44

My original hair colour was ace - very dark brown almost black. Great with my pale skin and green eyes.

The grey invasion I find less flattering so I have it coloured. Hairdresser thinks I'm v boring as I just want it to look like me'

ENormaSnob · 13/08/2013 23:46

I have almost black hair, fair skin and dark green eyes.

My eyebrows and lashes are black.

I love my colouring.
