Have I wasted circa £800 on a Burberry Trench?

DameDoom · 06/08/2013 00:03

It was my 40th last year and DH asked what I really wanted - asked for a Burberry trench coat, after all the quality is second to none and it will last a lifetime ( lived in France for 5 years so acquired a 'good trench' penchant). Anyhoos, hadn't got round to getting it until now - went to pick up my trench on Saturday in London ( we are up north

Now don't get me wrong it is a lovely, lovely and very classically chic coat befitting my advancing years. It looks great and I wore it on Sunday despite muggy weather in an attempt to be style personified. However... popped in to Whistles today and saw a trench, so I thought I'd try it on, just to compare. Whistles one is £155 and mine was £995 - to be honest there aint much in it. The Whistles one does lack some of the finer detail but who's gonna look that closely anyway? I am no label snob just wanted a really nice slim fitting coat that will go with jeans as well as other stuff.

Feel awful for DH ( although he has no idea I've compared). He has saved up to buy me this coat when the high street is doing comparably well.

Oh, yes, but yours has a really nice label, and as you say will last a life time.

Would you really expect to be wearing that Whistles coat in 10- 15 years time?

chattychattyboomba · 06/08/2013 00:09

No you most certainly have not. You get what you pay for!
Whistles have lovely clothes but nothing compared to the timeless style and quality of Burberry. They never date and they just bring an outfit together.
I have a rule, invest in the important things, the things you wear every day. They are coats, bags, shoes and jeans. The rest can be throwaway fashion but these things you will be guaranteed to get your money's worth in wear.
I own 4 Burberry coats.
A white quilted jacket, a white trench, a navy mac and a grey wooly winter coat.
They have all lasted me over 5 years and look as new as the day I bought them, unlike many high street coats which did not last one winter.

Agree with Lynette.
I have a Burberry duvet jacket, bought in 1998. It washes like a dream and is still fantastic.
I had no idea that Burberry had gone so down market in the interim, though.

DameDoom · 06/08/2013 00:15

Thank you - just feel so guilty about DH saving to get me something so special when something so much cheaper looks and feels almost the same. You have to admit though - the top end of the high street have really upped their game.

op you said it lacks the finer details, its the details that makes all the difference,my mum bought me one 8 years ago when i started my job,and im still using it,i think its made of magic Grin.

libertychick · 06/08/2013 00:39

Dame have you got a daugher? If you do you would potentially give it to her someday - highly unlikely to do this with the Whistles one. It's a treat for a special birthday - enjoy it.

TheDoctrineOfAllan · 06/08/2013 00:44

What a lovely present!

Vibbe · 06/08/2013 01:08

Burberry seems to be made with quality materials that will age well. Not a lot of high street brands will age as well. High street products (also the higher end of high street) will look almost as good in the shop, but they may not age as well.

I have a Burberry cape and a coat from the 70's and 80's and they have both aged very well. I can't think of a high street brand that would age as well as Burberry.

My Mum has one that was bought in the late 70s, she wear ot all the time and it still look stylish and classic.

Marylou2 · 06/08/2013 09:07

Absolutely not! You have a beautifully made, totally classic item bought for you by a man who obviously adores you. Wear it with pride. I think you'll appreciate it more when the weather gets a bit chillier.

QueenCadbury · 06/08/2013 09:21

dame I can totally understand why you feel like you do but as othes have said the Burberry will last and last. It's not about who looks at the finer details but about how fabulous you feel whilst wearing it. It's my 40th soon and like you I would like something to mark the occasion to still be using in years to come. Your dh saved for it so presumably you are not in debt for it so just enjoy it.

MrsPercyPig · 06/08/2013 09:21

I was all set to come on here and say you are mad spending £££ on a coat yada yada and then I looked on the Burberry website and saw this and am v Envy that I can't afford Burberry!

Bexicles · 06/08/2013 10:15

No not a waste, it was a gift to mark a special birthday from your DH and it's an iconic piece. Enjoy it!

peasandlove · 06/08/2013 10:47

MrsPercyPig that coat is gorgeous.. I too am Envy now

MissOtisRegrets · 06/08/2013 10:53

MrsP I love that coat! Envy Envy Envy

Enjoy your beautiful trench, OP. And happy birthday!

MarshaBrady · 06/08/2013 10:55

Which one did you get Dame?

We'll tell you how lovely it is.

SofaCanary · 06/08/2013 11:14

I have one that I've only worn a handful of times but that's more to do with it not really suiting me. They're beautifully made though and if you like a trench it doesn't get any better than a classic Burberry.

Enjoy it Smile

Elsiequadrille · 06/08/2013 11:17

No not at all, and not if you don't think so. It will last forever (almost) too.

girlsofsummer · 06/08/2013 11:53

I have an old vintage burberry and it is lovely dry cleans well.

DameDoom · 06/08/2013 13:05

It's this one Marshahttp://uk.burberry.com/store/trench-coats/womens-trench-coats/london/prod-38073171-mid-length-cotton-gabardine-trench-coat/ .
Thanks again for all your wise words S&Bers. Have spent morning trying on my trench with everything I own and it really does make any outfit look way better. I'll never have it off Wink. Have thought about cost per wear and realised that it is actually practically free!

That is a beautiful, beautiful trench. I want one now! I also want the one MrsP linked too.
They are true classics.

MarshaBrady · 06/08/2013 16:32

Yep that is beautiful. Definitely worth it.

Here's a link for others to check it out. Really lovely.
