Coconut Oil - sorry if I'm covering ancient ground....

Having recently discovered MN, in particular the health and beauty section I have seen mentioned coconut oil and I'm curious. what do you do with it and where do you get it? I have just found a pot of organic coconut oil in waitrose but it was in the cooking section so is it the wrong stuff? I haven't bought it yet.

I have also just bought some argan oil for my hair. any tips for that?

thanks wise ones x

Interesting. I pondered over some coconut oil this morning, but it was £15 and that seemed like a lot when i'm not really sure what to do with it.

I got a small pot at the chemist for about £1.50!

Cooking aisle stuff is fine, but you can get cheaper online. Also don't go for the organic one unless you like the smell of coconut - non-organic is a lot less smelly.

Re uses - use as an oil for taking off makeup and cleansing, use a smudge on dry hair to control Fritz, use on wet skin as a moisturiser etc etc

I get this one because it smells utterly amazing. I've had a different, cheaper brand before and it smelled of nothing. But as long as it's raw coconut oil it will do the job I think. I use it as a hair mask once a week - stick it on for a few hours then wash it out. Others use it for cleansing and all over moisturising.

I eat it off a spoon. Nice spread on a square of Green and Blacks 85%.

Most Indian shops/supermarkets do a big pot for about £5 but the ones I've seen aren't organic.

Boots also do a small pot for about £3 if that is easier for you.

Thank you everyone Thanks £3 from boots sounds perfect. I'll give it a go.

I get Coconoil from Amazon in big tubs. I use it for loads of purposes.

Moisturiser on damp skin straight out of the shower.

Rub a little in to elbows and knees and ankles before I fake tan.

Use it once a fortnight to condition hair...just massage in to damp hair, tie up and leave over night. It doesnt leave greasy stains on oillows like other oils might.

Use it instead of body lotion on my kids after the bath. Also run a bit through Dd's tick curly hair when its still wet as a leave-in conditioner.
