Getting old now and have never done the pictures on the wall thing or cosy cushions. The nest-building gene has completely evaded me but have finally made the decision to make some home improvements. Where do I start? Anyone recommend any books or magazines for an amateur?

Yes, was thinking of a trip to IKEA for some material but not sure where to start, how much to buy or if I can really sew (SEW? ME?) Channel 4 programme sounds interseting but I don´t have access to it : (

its a magazine called 4HOMES

why would you need to sew? IKEA is very cheap, they have a huge choice, you just go in and grab and trolley and have a wander around

they have lots of displays of real rooms you can take ideas from, there should also be an IKEA magazine for you to flick through

get a couple of magazines and keep the pages and pictures of rooms you like, write down colours of paint and curtains etc you like

ikea has everything you should be looking for

good luck!

Best magazine for contemporary but affordable and more importantly do able is Living Etc Elle decor more fashiony and homes and gardens more expensive fittings and fairly traditional in style.I agree walk round ikea and habitat and go for what you like really as taste is individual and you do have to live with it
