Can you look groomed with your hair up! Does anyone?

Inspired but the Kate thread!
It seems that blow dried hair is the way to achieving a groomed look!

I do not have the time to wash and blowdry everyday; does anyone feel they look groomed with hair up?

I always feel like the bag lady with my hair up!

Would love some helpful hints!

Is your hair straight? I find a neat ponytail can look groomed, if you backcomb the crown a bit and hairspray it in place. I'd love some ideas for more interesting styles though.

My sister is very sophisticated and often puts her hair up in a messy bun, which I think looks really nice.

happyreindeer · 24/07/2013 21:04

Teenagers with gorgeous messy buns always make me feel envious.

MrsPercyPig · 24/07/2013 21:04

But what do thirty somethings with messy buns look like?!

I think it depends on hair type. Mine is crap and fine and goes horridly frizzy at the front which means that when I put it up, I look awful. Heavier hair probably works better.

Watching this thread with interest ...

I am guilty of being a serial ponytail wearer - and along with my specs, being somewhat overweight and my penfold specs, I feel like I look hideous somewhat less than glamorous.

Oh - and I scrape my hair back in spite of having an unreasonably high forehead that for decency's sake really should be covered!

Just like the OP, there is just no time for daily blow-dry's.

Fairylea · 24/07/2013 21:08

I feel more dressed up with a sock bun (good videos on youtube on how to do one) than I do with my hair down.I always feel a bit wild with loose hair ... it's long and wavy. I'm 33.

littlemisswise · 24/07/2013 21:11

I think you can.

I have shoulder length hair that is fine and a tendency to be greasy so I wash it every day. I do dry it and straighten it, but often put it in a ponytail, like Lexie says.

Something like this could help you achieve a simple "up do".

I bought one of these bun rollers, but my hair is slightly too short, and perhaps a little too fine, to use ATM. It is simple, though, and makes an easy bun. I have seen some sponge roller ones on ebay that I am going to have a try with.

GwennieF · 24/07/2013 21:13

I look like a witch with my hair loose - it just doesn't suit me at all. Whereas when I wear it up I look smart - I wear it in loads of different ways rarely ever in a ponytail, mostly buns, chignons, pleats..... I don't like the loose ends...

Also, it stays up better if you don't wash it every day - giving me an excuse for my early morning laziness!

TallulahBetty · 24/07/2013 21:31

I feel groomed when I have a sock bun, even a messy one.

sonotfunny · 24/07/2013 21:35

littlemisswise - I like the look of the bun roller. I've tried the sock bun method and find it too fiddly. It's hard to see from the pics on the website - but is the plastic roller very visible once the bun has been rolled? (so to speak!)

I tried the sock bun method but it didn't work for my hair.

DoItRight · 24/07/2013 21:36

I love going on Pinterest for hair inspiration, then you tubing how to do it. Could never do hair up before this year and discovering this (am 33)!

merrymouse · 24/07/2013 21:39

Tippi heddren seemed to make it work in the birds.

InMyShreddies · 24/07/2013 21:41

I think most of us put our hair up when it's needing a wash. So maybe the key is to wash it, blast it dry just to get some volume into it, then style into a ponytail with a parting or a quiff, sock bun or whatever.

I don't do this but always think I should try. It just seems like a waste of nice clean hair, to shove it all back!

littlemisswise · 25/07/2013 19:23

sonotfunny I bought a black one and have brown hair, it isn't that visible, TBH. I would imagine if your hair is not really fine, as mine is, it wouldn't really show at all.

Lexiesinclair · 27/07/2013 21:57

I have bought a bun roller inspired by littlemisswise today. It's fab. :)

Vibbe · 27/07/2013 22:24

I always have my hair up.

I either have a messy bun, a ponytail, put my hair up with a hair donut or use these pins to make a bun. Or I plait my hair, alternatively have the plaited hair up in a bun with those pins I've linked to.

I have a fringe, which I sometimes pin back or to the side.

cafenoir · 27/07/2013 23:05

I only looked groomed with my hair up. It's fine and thinning and I use a hair wrap to bulk up my meagre locks. I do a twisted braid at the front which I clip up and look the most groomed I think I've ever looked. My hair is so fine that left down it just looks ratty and messy.
