Would bright red nails and lips be too much with a bright red dress?

Keztrel · 24/07/2013 13:48

The dress is a bright true red and I'm wearing it with black tights and black heels. I look a bit pale and bleurgh in neutral or pale lipstick, and pink would clash - but would matching lips and dress be too much? Same with nails, not sure what to do about them, I normally wear bright or dark nails.

I would go for red lips and either neutral or dark nails. Are you sure that black tights are the way to go, would you not get away with bare legs?

QueenCadbury · 24/07/2013 14:01

Go for it, red lips will look fine. I'd go for different colour nails though. Maybe something clashing like bright pink or a kind of taupe/mole colour.

MadAboutHotChoc · 24/07/2013 14:03

Black nails? Red lippy sounds fine but not sure about the black tights...bare legs or nude tights would be better.

member · 24/07/2013 14:03

For evening ok, otherwise have one of them neutral & I agree that the black tights may not be the best choice.

Keztrel · 24/07/2013 14:06

Casmama I don't want to wear bare legs, my legs are so white that I don't think it looks that good. The red and black do look really good together - but not that summery Confused It will probably be raining anyway...

Like the idea of mole colour nails Queen, I have Essie Chinchilly so that might work.

How about going for nude (invisible) tights or bare legs instead of the black ones? Would IMO be more summery.

For nails, I'd go with a colour like Chanel Rouge Noir, grey or taupe.
For lips, I'd probably go for a tinted gloss, a lipstick used as a stain (could be a red) or a my-lips-but-better colour.

Or you could go for some colourblocking by adding a coral/orange/pink colour (like a pashmina) and have a similar nail and lip colour.

Keztrel · 24/07/2013 14:10

This is the kind of shape and length (and colour) of the dress: <a class="break-all" href="http://www.google.co.uk/imgres?sa=X&biw=1024&bih=653&tbm=isch&tbnid=u1hLH-cVtFKiAM:&imgrefurl=alessiapearl.blogspot.com/2011/02/how-to-wear-little-red-dress.html&docid=TuFUyMUMPT7jGM&imgurl=2.bp.blogspot.com/-2UMp_hZ0ta4/TVo0EFiTVaI/AAAAAAAAArU/JBYwKoTjJHA/s320/red%252Bdress%252Bwith%252Bblack%252Btights.bmp&w=277&h=586&ei=ZtHvUe2vJKfO0QXN5IC4DQ&zoom=1&ved=1t:3588,r:3,s:0,i:96&iact=rc&page=1&tbnh=177&tbnw=87&start=0&ndsp=14&tx=33&ty=52" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">here I like it with the black tights! And nude tights (which I don't like ever on anyone, sorry) would mean buying new shoes. Bare legs would mean getting new legs...

Vibbe I like the idea of Chanel Rouge Noir nails with it - if you don't think they clash with scarlet red? Am so bad at matching colours. I'm sure you're all right that non-black legs would look good, but it's not an option!

OP posts:
Keztrel · 24/07/2013 14:12

Maybe I'll put up a picture of the dress with black tights tonight and you can tell me if it looks too bad/unsummery.

OP posts:
MadAboutHotChoc · 24/07/2013 14:15

and one without tights Wink

rouge nior would work and so would dark grey.

Keztrel · 24/07/2013 14:18

Oh alright, one without tights too - not sure what the shoe situation will be... I'm so much happier dressing for cold weather.

Glad you all think rouge noir will work, I think I'll go with that and lips stained lightly red instead of full on red. Thanks all!

If I do decide to go with bare legs, what colour shoes would go best, bearing in mind my legs are white. Silver?

OP posts:
MadAboutHotChoc · 24/07/2013 14:27

Black or silver should be fine. What other colours do you have?

Keztrel · 24/07/2013 14:32

I don't currently have any silver heels, only silver ballet flats, which wouldn't be smart enough I think (but would be nice and comfy). The black heels are suede and too chunky probably to wear with bare white legs: they're like this not quite as high.

They're the only heels I have and only come out when I absolutely need to look smart and eveningy. I could pop to somewhere like New Look and get some more shoes though.

MadAboutHotChoc · 24/07/2013 15:18

The black heels are gorgeous! Go for these then Smile

Keztrel · 24/07/2013 19:43

OK, I've put up some pictures - two of the bright red dress I was talking about, with and without tights, and two with another dress I could wear, which I like but have worn to at least 3 other weddings in the last two years (with some of the same guests, not that they care).

The black shoes are my only heels but have just remembered my mum has some tan leather strappy ones which are more summery and might look better with bare legs.

I am wondering now whether I like my bright red dress at all...Confused Weddings suck.

Opinions please!

Both dresses actually look fine with the tights, probably cos you have long legs Envy - the first one looks smarter than the second one and might be more suitable for a wedding. Is this wedding a posh affair? If its a more laidback one then the bright red one should be fine.

ZingWidge · 24/07/2013 20:41

no

you can never have too much red unless you are bleeding

MadAboutHotChoc · 24/07/2013 20:43

I also think you can get away with red nails and lippy with that bright red as the red will be balanced out by the black tights/shoes.

QueenCadbury · 24/07/2013 20:51

I really like the tight with them but I do love a black opaque! I don't personally like bare legs with black heels so maybe you should get some new shoes for next time Grin

Keztrel · 24/07/2013 20:59

Ah glad you like the tights! I'm with you QueenC, black opaques go with everything! Its a laid back wedding, not a posh one.

OP posts:
Keztrel · 24/07/2013 21:00

And yes agree I need some non black shoes for future occasions!

Drywhiteplease · 24/07/2013 21:05

Op just copy the celeb photo she looks great. I'd go with the tights, although they look a bit wintry, you will feel self conscious with bare legs although after a few Wine you won't care. I'd do ted lip and nude nail, just like the celeb. You are v pretty with an amazing smile, will look lovely whatever you decide on.

Keztrel · 24/07/2013 21:23

Thanks drywhite :) A friend once bought me some St Tropez (I guess it was a heavy hint...!) I tried it once and just looked streaky and dirty, my fault not the product's I'm sure.

Yes fake tan is not for everyone
