Shortening a maxi dress

Is shortening a maxi dress possible?

Bought the Hush maxi dress in whale in the sale. Love the shape, colour, fabric but it's ridiculously long so am considering returning it but I do like it - is it worth my while having it shortened? An extra expense I hadn't considered so may return it - has anyone else had a maxi dress taken up?

I have - I'm lucky that my mum is an ex-seamstress so she's always altering clothes for me. I've got maxi dresses that I've just had a couple of inches taken off so they are still maxi's but the correct length (I'm only 5ft 2) and also a maxi dress that I've had shortened to a knee length dress. Both ways worked fine - in fact I'd say the one I've had shortened to knee length actually looks better :-)

I've just sent mine in to be shortened by a local seamstress [Gap Drapey Maxi in Grey] . It will be the normal length of a maxi when done and cost £8.50.

I'm a shorty and have all my maxi dresses taken up. mum is a seamstress so that helps. If it wasn't for my mum I would only consider paying for it if I absolutely loved the dress. £8 is quite a bit on top to pay.
