I have a philosophical question for the bra gurus....something is bugging me.

So the correct bra band is the under bust measurement.

The correct cup is 'calculated' by subtracting the band size from the over bust measurement.

Sooooo....when you advise to go down a back size (for whatever reason)....why do you only advise going up 1 cup size.....surely it should be up 2 cups as the difference between band size and overbust measurement is now 2" bigger than it was before.

I know its not really important because I know that actual fit is a whole lot more reliable than the tape measure....but if the band size is 2" smaller surely that is 2 cups bigger and it bugs me.

I've mostly seen the 'bra gurus' recommend just that, going down one or two cup sizes depending on fit.

The cup volume on, for example, a 34D is roughly equivalent to that of a 32DD.

If someone is wearing a 34D and the back is loose and they have overspill/bulge in the cup/underarm etc. then you usually suggest they try a smaller band and a bigger cup (i.e. a 32E). The cup volume of a 32E is roughly equivalent to that of a 34DD.

Personally, I only find the "down one/up one" thing works within a single band variance. So it works if you are normally a 30H and want to try a bra in a 32GG for example and I think that's probably because most people lie somewhere in between sizes anyway. But it doesn't really work if you go any further. But I normally advise trying 1 or two cups, and I've also seen married say that in her experience it becomes 3 cup sizes for 2 back sizes which would tie in with up one/down one only working within a single size range.

However the same thing has puzzled me too, and when working on measurements it's definitely 2:1
