What are your staples for autumn and winter?

Have totally given up on summer clothes now and looking ahead.
My 'uniform' seems to consist of either jeans or a pair of slim black trousers with a variety of tops/ cardis and slim cords maybe for weekends, plus some wool knitted dresses and tunics / thick tights and knee length or ankle boots.

Any ideas would be great- I work from home so have no need for office clothes but prefer a smart casual look.

Good plan! I also work from home so probably have similar needs to you. My essentials would be along the lines of:

  • Indigo, black or coloured skinnies
  • Chinos but only until it's too cold to wear socks!
  • Longline wool or cotton tunics (plain or minimal pattern) that can be worn over leggings or skinnies
  • Jersey dresses with chunky tights
  • Fitted long sleeve t-shirts
  • Denim shirt
  • Fitted cashmere v-neck to wear over vests
  • Leather knee high and ankle boots
  • Chunky wedges
  • Sheepskin lined boots for when it's really cold
  • Practical coat with a hood
  • Smarter coat for going out (currently a Princess style)
  • Leather biker
  • Lots of scarves and a decent bag to add a bit of interest (some of the above sound pretty boring!)

For working at home I've developed a 'uniform' consisting of jersey trousers, fitted hoodies/sweatshirts and an assortment of vests and t-shirts - means I can layer up or down as needed and is as comfy as working in my PJs but looks and feels slightly more professional.

Missbopeep · 02/07/2013 15:20

Are you sure you are not me?

I'm lusting after a leather biker but wonder if I can justify the expense as they are not very warm I imagine- I like my bum covered. (Not big, but gets cold lol)

I need more long sleeved Ts.
I need more really thick jumpers or another cashmere one ( or two).

I need more accessories like nice scarves.

Biker jackets in real leather are much warmer than you'd think. I thought it would just be a waste until I actually bought one, now it's one of my most worn items.

Missbopeep · 02/07/2013 15:23

oh tempting. DH will be cross as he IS a biker but I'm not- though a jacket would be nice :)

I think the PU jackets would be quite chilly but if you go for actual leather, I think you'd be surprised at how cosy they actually are. On chilly days, I just wear a longer cardigan to cover my bum

CambridgeBlue · 02/07/2013 15:29

I love a biker jacket layered over a soft jumper - think it's the mix of textures. As they tend to be quite short just make sure your jumper is long enough or you get that horrid gap between top and bottom - neither warm nor flattering!

spottymoo · 02/07/2013 16:16

Skinny jeans
Fitted t shirts
Vest tops for layering
Leggings and tunics
Denim skirts and jumpers
Ugg boots and leather knee highs leather pumps
Parka with hood for cold wet days.

I'm in need of some nice jumpers not to expensive but look smart.

I also need to stay clear of grey as every item of clothing I seemed to have brought in the last six months has grey in it.

Missbopeep · 02/07/2013 17:39

So how much would you invest in a biker jacket? I had a quick look online and Whistles have one for around £295. I don't want shiny or aged- it would have to be smooth , matte and understated.

Don't forget a denim jacket as a basic.

Yellow and pink look good with grey.

New length midi skirts are what I am starting to stock up on for Autumn.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 02/07/2013 17:42

Yes to a biker jacket. Warehouse have some lovely ones in their sale at the mo for around the £100 mark. Wear with a longer slimline jumper underneath for bum covering.

I like mini dresses (well, over the knee!) and opaque tights, with ankle boots and a biker jacket.

Jersey dresses

Topshop column maxi skirts with ankle boots

Scarves, scarves and more scarves

And unlike most people on here, I like a long sleeved t-shirt under a short sleeved jumper, with skinnies.

Where do you buy such said long sleeved t-shirts and short sleeved jumpers?
Could you post a few links to give me ideas, please?

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 02/07/2013 18:04

Long sleeved t-shirts: usually M&S or Dickens and Jones but I need new ones. Short sleeved jumpers - virtually impossible to find, and my favourite one (ancient Urban Outfitters) has finally fallen to pieces. :(

Missbopeep · 02/07/2013 18:04

Uniqlo are v good for long sleeved Ts though they have few shops so you are reliant on web unless you can get to London. Other shops include Lands End, White Stuff, White Company , Boden ( though all in preview are stripy unless you want boring grey, white ot navy.)

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 02/07/2013 18:08

Here but I prefer stripes underneath or on top

SprinkleLiberally · 02/07/2013 18:09

I was just thinking today that I'm ignoring seasons from now on, keeping a range of clothes in my wardrobe, and wearing whatever is weather appropriate regardless of the month.

HoneyandRum · 02/07/2013 18:11

If you can buy Espirit in Britain they usually have a great selection of short sleeve jumpers and tunics each Autumn.

dexter73 · 02/07/2013 18:34

I have a couple of cashmere t-shirts like these but from Brora. They don't seem to have any at the moment though.

VivaLeBeaver · 02/07/2013 18:39

Zara and Gap have long sleeved t-shirts in most autumns, Zara do quite good quality Breton tops.

CharlotteBronteSaurus · 02/07/2013 19:12

i really need a new trenchcoat
old one is fraying on the cuffs
but all the ones I see are very full-skirted, and I was hoping for something more streamlined if anyone has seen anything??

also need some new black cigarette pants as my size 16s are too big now

Jemster · 02/07/2013 19:17

When do the shops generally start getting A/W stuff in? I can't anything in the shops now in my 'Autumn' colours and have a load of vouchers so thinking I might just save them now for later in the year.

marleebrodie · 02/07/2013 20:04

Boden cord dress possibly two with long sleeved T underneath.
Black GAP skinnies to be worn with long top and long boots so hopefully no one at work will realise they are actually jeans.
Tank top and couple of long shirts to wear underneath with tweed preppy trousers.
Don't need a coat this year as bought one last Jan and not worn it yet.
Loads of boots but need some nice tan coloured or red Mary Janes if anyone sees any.
Maybe a couple of thicker tea dresses to wear with cardi.
Love planning for new season.
It is all about hope and expectation- usually still end up looking like I shop at jumble sales.

Long sleeved tops under short sleeved tops runs the risk of looking a bit Dr Sheldon Cooper Grin
