It would be ridiculous to get a perm right?

Bear with me. I haven't stepped back into the 1980s. I have crap hair. It is fine and these days there isn't much of it. It tends to frizz really badly and looks lank the rest of the time. I live somewhere where the humidity is stifling and I hate that my hair looks crap the whole time. It's about jaw length because it is too limp to look good long. But I am just so FED UP of having crap hair.

I've had this crazy idea that maybe the way through this is to try and embrace the humidity and to get some kind of super loose perm. Literally something that would put a wave and some body into my hair but not much more. I could then put in anti-frizz stuff in the morning but then pretty much leave it after that. This is a dream right? I will either look like a 1980s throw back or it will just not work out at all and will trash my hair in the process. In my mind/ dream it would look something like this

Any thoughts?

I don't think it looks that great even on Charlize, sorry.

BlameItOnTheBogey · 16/06/2013 15:40

Oh crap. YOu're probably right. But what else can I do then?

Brazilian blow dry!!!

BlameItOnTheBogey · 16/06/2013 15:46

But surely that will just make my fine limp hair even more fine and limp? I want a bit more oomph to it...

Babyliss big brush!

MiniTheMinx · 16/06/2013 15:50

I think it looks lovely on Charlize. I know polka straight hair is fashionable but few people look great with straight limp hair.

I would say go for it but I would grow your hair down a few inches because it springs up! Hair grows, its not as though you'll be stuck with it for ever if you don't like it.

BlameItOnTheBogey · 16/06/2013 15:57

Thanks for taking time to reply. Babyliss won't crack it for two reasons;

  • my hair is too short; and
  • I am looking for something that will require less not more effort (at the moment I spend ages trying to defrizz only to outside at which point my hair turns into a frizz ball).

And yes Mini I agree that straight hair is quite hard to pull off. I think you need lots of thick hair to make it work. I have not very much fine hair...

A gentle perm a la Charlize would look great! I have the same sort of hair as you but with a slight wave so I can make it look a bit like that, on days when I can't be bothered blow drying or straightening. If I didn't have the wave in it naturally I would definitely get a perm as it's then so easy to deal with with the aid of a drop of hair oil.

MiniTheMinx · 16/06/2013 19:27

I don't think it's just having thick hair though, sometimes it's face shape. I would look life a long faced elf with straight hair. I used to have mine permed ( 10+ yrs ago now) it makes your hair easier to style, holds it's style and alters the texture of your hair. It feels thicker.

Good luck, I'm sure you'll look fab.

MiniTheMinx · 16/06/2013 19:27

*look like

Hi OP, I had a root perm done last year and I was really sorry. Now I had them a lot in my teens but whatever it did, my hair is wrecked.

Dollydowser · 16/06/2013 19:45

I would say that Charlize hair has been tonged, not permed. It is virtually impossible to achieve that type of curl with a perm, especially on fine hair as a soft perm would drop out really quickly.

Callycat · 17/06/2013 09:04

Don't know much about perms, but I'd say go for it! Have occasionally considered it myself - I'm not a fan of the super-straight look. Waves are pretty.

Gingersnap88 · 17/06/2013 10:51

I don't think it's a crazy idea, deepening on what you have one. There was a Japanese girl in my class at school who had her hair permed into the most beautiful waves, looked great. I've been thinking about having it done when I'm no longer breast feeding, maybe look for somewhere specialist over a 80s one? Wink

I am always tempted to have a Ray of Light era Madonna perm. I'm too worried of ending up looking like this to go ahead with it though.
