Looking for a dress that looks 'wow'

nappydaysagain · 14/06/2013 17:53

For the first time in 12 years DH and I are having a long child free weekend away.
We'll be eating out and I really want to look like I've made an effort and for him to think 'wow'.
The problem is I'm only 5 foot and a size 10 and cannot find anything I like.
Have a small budget of about £65.
Please can any mumsnetters help me out.
I'd ordered a dress in Next today looked great on the website but not on Hmm

I'd seen this one
ASOS PETITE Lace Soft Wrap Skater Dress
But does it look cheep? Also not sure about what bra underneath. Have BF 3 children so braless isn't possible

I read that as 5 foot 10 and was wondering why you were looking the petite range!

Personally when I first saw that dress I thought it was a nightie but that might just be me. What did you order from Next, can you link?

Is the £65 for dress, shoes, etc, or just a dress?

Do you like this in either colour?

Your weekend away sounds lovely Smile

ComeAlongPond · 14/06/2013 19:00

Or this one? What is it that drew you to the ASOS one - lace? Colour? Slinkiness?

MrsLettuce · 14/06/2013 19:10

maybe?

Tweet2tweet · 14/06/2013 19:18

This is bit over your budget but if you can stretch to it:
in black
Although it s bit more it s very classic and you could wear again and again....

nappydaysagain · 14/06/2013 19:22

I like the first one you linked to comealongpond but think I'd need to buy a bra to wear under it.

The budget is just for the dress.

I'm so rubbish I can't link. This is the dress if I copy and paste the info from the dress on the Next site Black Dress
144-239-X51 it's just called black dress and its £55.
I wasn't sure about the print on the website and when I tried it on my DS who's 3 said it was a Harry Potter dress which wasn't the look I was going for Wink

Mint Velvet have some nice ones and there is 20% off dresses right now, I think. IIRC, the code is SUMMERDRESS.

LeoandBoosmum · 14/06/2013 19:50

Also John Lewis is in sale ... lots of dresses! Smile

nappydaysagain · 14/06/2013 19:53

I like the top shop one MadamLettuce. I do like the one you've linked Tweet2tweet but being petite it looks as though it may be a little long which would spoil the look of the dress.
Will have a look at shop style uk and mint velvet.

Try Lady Vintage. Fabulous dresses and really good value and service.

hermioneweasley · 14/06/2013 19:57

Oo, tweet,I love that Michael Kors dress.

This comes in lots of colours and prints.

cerealqueen · 14/06/2013 23:20

like the previous one but bit cheaper

or?

MrsLettuce · 14/06/2013 23:30

wow LBD

MrsLettuce · 14/06/2013 23:34

It needs a strapless bra and red shoes. Wonderbra ultimate strapless is unbeatable.

WeGotTheKrunk · 15/06/2013 13:07

OP I'm petite, like you, and I find that Apricot dresses are very flattering:

You can get them in a diffusion line in Debenhams and New Look (in their Label Lounge). Not too pricey either.

Good luck with your weekend away, it sounds like you deserve it!

nappydaysagain · 15/06/2013 16:06

Quick update. I've bought a dress from a local shop in the small town we live in. Not at all like the previous dressess I've been looking at, but it fits me perfectly and I'm really pleased with it.

I will attempt a link but my previous attempts have all failed. I would like to point out that the dress is just above the knee on me as unfortunately my legs are several inches shorter than the models Grin

I'm also extra pleased as I only paid £55.

I'd not put in my previous posts but the weekend away is actually in Barcelona

Have you looked at Zara? I got this dress for the exact same purpose and I love it. DH loves it too Wink

I have never linked before so it might not work but I have a french connection Almondo stretch dress in black which is stunning (£120) Sadly my dress has never been worn - its still got original labels on, it says 12 but its a very slim one!

You can have it for 65 if you like xx

This may not be a popular opinion but if I am dressing for my DH (eg wearing something that I want to make him say 'wow') I will always choose something that most flatters or draws attention to the part of my body I know he loves the most.

dH always comments on how much he loves my shoulders/neck/decotellage so I always wear something strapless if I want to impress.

Have fun, Barca is my favourite place ever, I am very envious!

MrsLettuce · 15/06/2013 19:39

It's a good dress but more one to make 'the girls' go wow rather than a bloke.

MrsLettuce · 15/06/2013 19:44

The black warehouse one I linked to is more a blokey Wow dress. Really. Would be amazingly flattering I think - horizontal lines are slimming
