A shirt (half shirt) dress please

I have decided that this type of dress might suit me. But I can't find one! I think it would be a good staple (what my mum would call a mileage dress "you'd get a lot of mileage out of that") - nice for the office with heels, or wedges, and nice for a summer's day out and about with flat sandals.

What I am looking for is:

A cotton dress
That flares out from the waist
Either button through or button to the waist (not a wrap over style top as I am flat chested and they always gape)
Able to be shortened, as I am 5 foot 1 inch tall

I am not fussed about the colour, but I would prefer something plainer than very patterned. I am a size 10 (12 on a bad day). Smallish chest, biggish thighs and hips (which is why I think this type of dress might suit).

No particular budget, but not high end designer or anything.

Is anyone able to help me please?

Dirt cheap - the cut-outs might not be your thing. Looks short on the model but might not be on you.

topsyturner · 11/06/2013 08:48

Lands End (on Debenhams) website do some nice ones .

HappyAsEyeAm · 11/06/2013 08:49

I fear I'm too old for cutouts 50Shades (I'm 37) - and it wouldn't go down well in the office! Thanks for making a suggestion though.

I should also have said that it needs to have sleeves (any length), but definitely sleeves.

topsy I love the red and the blue shirt dresses on the Lands End section of the Debenhams website. It was music to my ears when a reviewer said that the dress was too short! Unfortunately, they are both sold out in my size! And they don't appear on Lands End's own website.

Actually I think there was a similar one in the store without the cut-outs and with sleeves - but it ain't on the website.

(What do you mean 37 too old!)

totallystumped · 11/06/2013 09:23

anything like this? Blue or this? Black (it does button to the bottom)

HappyAsEyeAm · 11/06/2013 09:58

I've never bought anything from La Redoute, so I hadn't even considered it. Thanks for the suggestion. This one come up above the knee on the model, so maybe that's a better option for me as I'm so short.

How about this from Jaeger: It's even on sale

From Mango: Linen cotton blend and Shirt dress

HappyAsEyeAm · 11/06/2013 10:13

Thanks Vibbe I really like both. I've ordered the Jaeger one in pink, to be delivered to my local Waitrose tomorrow, and I will take a look at the Mango one in store towards the end of the week. its short, isn't it! Will be a normal knee length on me though, I expect.

Thanks again for your efforts. The pink one is more what I had in mind style wise, but the Mango one would be useful too, and its nice and cheap! I will report back.

The Mango one that isn't linen, I mean. I'm not good with linen - I always look a crumbled mess in it.

Right.

The jaeger one is absolutely lovely. But as i am so short, is too long from the neck to the waist, and there is too much bulk. It is also too wide across the chest. I am gutted. The fabric, style and colour are all lovely. But it doesnt fit.

I went to my local mango today to try the other suggestion on. It has gone and closed down! Apparently it closed about a month ago! I don't feel that I can complain though, as I never bought anything in there myself.

Back to the drawing board. Think I need something from a petite range as this has happened to me before when I try to buy dresses.

monsoon? in navy or red

ellangirl · 13/06/2013 20:51

Sorry, just realised it's not cotton Smile

ellangirl · 13/06/2013 20:55

People tree have a few along those lines for example here or here though I appreciate they're patterned.

tethersend · 13/06/2013 20:56

would you do sleeveless?

ellangirl · 13/06/2013 20:56

Or here but would prob need to be shortened.

HappyAsEyeAm · 13/06/2013 21:06

Thanks all, but I need something from a petite range. If ever I buy a dress from a regular range, it is always way too long in the body. Its fine to shorten off the length, and I am used to that, but the shoulder to waist is always too long, and you can't alter that. I am gutted about the jaeger one, as that was almost perfect. Well, save for the fit.

I've just got an amanda wakely shirt dress (1/2 sleeves, fitted slightly, plain black stretch cotton) for£8 so do keep scouting on ebay!
