What is the fashion nowadays? Am so out of touch.

i have been invited to a 40th birthday party and have no idea what to wear. In fact, I don't actually have any "going out" clothes anymore, just jeans and t shirts and trainers.
It's been about 4 years since I last went out and have googled this seasons fashion but it all seems to be aimed at 20 and 30 year olds. I'm 46 and whilst I'm not exactly over the hill yet, don't want to end up looking like mutton dressed as lamb.
What does someone my age wear on a night out these days?

I am assuming that it's not cocktail dress or anything formal.

If you like wearing jeans, how about some black skinny jeans, and a great jacket. Neon and coral colours are very in at the moment. You could do that for your top half. How much do you want to spend? Do you have anything, like nice jeans, already?
