Can i wear a navy top with black trousers? My mother keeps coming out with rhymes/sayings about certain colours that "shouldnt be seen together!" Now iam doubting what looks ok and what, according to 'mother' doesnt.

I like navy and black together so it is a yes from me.

VBisme · 08/06/2013 15:14

I wouldn't, but it's up to you.
The colours I wouldn't put with black are navy blue and dark brown. Anything else goes.

LondonBus · 08/06/2013 15:18

Well, Victoria Beckham does....

Abra1d · 08/06/2013 15:20

Navy and black can look very stylish together.

dexter73 · 08/06/2013 15:25

Here is the question on the Vogue forum.

othgraph · 08/06/2013 15:31

Yes - but it looks best when there's a constrast

PinkMangoSays · 08/06/2013 15:34

I do but I know my mother never used to let me as a child. It was like the pink/red rule...

GibberTheMonkey · 08/06/2013 15:42

I think any colour combination can work if done well
Including red and pink

littlediamond33 · 08/06/2013 15:47

Thank you everyone, and thank you for all the links.really kind of you :)

mewkins · 08/06/2013 20:07

Ooh yes. I think it looks great. I think pink and red look great together too

Reastie · 08/06/2013 20:10

Interested in this as I was always taught the same, and also not to red and pink.

SanityClause · 08/06/2013 20:13

Yes, also blue and green even without a colour in between.

mewkins · 08/06/2013 21:20

No idea how these rules came about - thought that the colour wheel theory says that colours directly opposite each other compliment but that the colours immediately either side tone with each other...and surely green is next to blue on a colour wheel and pink is next to red.....hmmm

GibberTheMonkey · 08/06/2013 21:25

I believe if nature can get away with it then so can we

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 08/06/2013 21:34

I like it a lot, but think it's a v wintry combo.

Startail · 08/06/2013 22:02

Yes, to contrast. Either, in shade or texture. I have some very dark navy linen type trousers and a normal black jersy T shirt doesn't work.

The mac, scarf and hat works brilliantly because the mac is lighter navy and smooth against the matt black of the other items.

Startail · 08/06/2013 22:05

or pink and orange with ginger hair, which can work really well.

Abra1d · 09/06/2013 09:58

It works best when the navy is not a very dark navy.

HotSoupDumpling · 10/06/2013 06:56

Yes. My MIL has commented that it doesn't go. I don't care. I think it looks inky and interesting.

Lambzig · 10/06/2013 10:04

I think it's very French chic if done properly.
