We're going to a black tie do next month. I am in my 30's and will be one of the youngest there, so I'd like to look elegant but not too frumpy.

The dress above is what I'm looking for, something slightly vintage but not too revealing..sold out in anything but a size 8 which would be a bit of a squeeze..can anyone by any chance suggest anything similar they might have seen in shops/online?

Online is much much easier for me as we're out in the countryside, but I'm in central London a couple of times before the party so could get to a shop..

Please help! We haven't been to a party like this since before the kids were born 8 years ago and I'd like to look nice.

Thanks so much for any help anyone can give :)

this? Are you sure cocktail length is OK?

This?

What's your budget/size?

canyou · 05/06/2013 20:52

I am sorry on pH cannot link but if budget is tight Amazon have lovely vintage style dresses think 40's and 50's style which do not look cheap I have bought two dressed from them and they are good quality

Would you do navy?

smellylittleorange · 05/06/2013 22:05

try fever clothing

Thanks so much all this is really helpful. Sorry forgot to mention budget, which is tight, would need to be under £100 sadly, as I don't wear dresses like this very often! Am size 10, 5ft 7, fair colouring.

M&Co ones look really interesting - I would never have thought of them for evening wear supply..

BUT I hadn't thought re the cocktail length and whether it is appropriate. The event is hosted by an old family friend of DH who is very £££/old money. I believe he's inviting a real range of people some of whom will be wearing granny's antique tiara and some will be wearing normal high street clothes. So I'm hoping that I won't be the only one in a vintage deb dress because I certainly can't afford one! Not really anyone I can ask as DH doesn't know anyone else going!

Are there in fact black tie "rules" about dress length? Or is that white tie.. ..

"When it comes to black-tie attire, the Debrett?s book notes that for women this dress code today ?is infinitely more complicated, as its presence on a card can signify any level of dress, ranging from a little lycra number to just sub-white-tie levels of splendour. The old clearly defined distinctions between dinner and dance dresses have largely disappeared and their place has been taken merely by confusion.?
