I'm a fat 49 year old. Can I wear shoes with slim high heels or will I look like a pig on stilts?

I've put on a lot of weight over the past year and now am size 20. I have an evening function coming up and I'll be the oldest there, most will be in their 20s and there may be a nightclub involved later in the night so I need to make an effort.

Dug out some shoes I wore when I was much slimmer, black cage front with 4 inch thin spike heel, but am scared to wear because I remember reading an article some years ago where the writer had said fat women should never wear heels as they look like pigs on stilts. Is this right?

I have good hair and make up and thought if I could accessorise with great shoes, jewellery and bag it might detract from the body part!

I think the writer was wrong - was it Liz Jones by any chance?! The shoes sound great to me.

Sorry but that description made me laugh!

Wedges would be better although whenever I go out no one really sees what shoes you are wearing in a dark, crowded nightclub, unless you plan to dance on the tables!

Honey, put on the shoes that you want to wear. Don't you even bat an eyelid at anyone else, and you strut your stuff. In the West Indian community, a larger woman, and one in her prime, does not have to explain herself to anyone.

Put on that hat/necklace/lipstick of confidence, look at yourself in the mirror, and say, " yes, this is me, and I love myself".

You will exube confidence, happiness and encouragement to all others. Don't ever put yourself down because of your body shape or size.

Much love x

I'm wearing wedges to posh wedding on Saturday. As long as I can squeeze my fat trotters into them! Am always worried about heels snapping or sinking into the ground!

Hands up anyone who has deliberated over buying a pair of shoes or sandals, then spent a small fortune only to walk a short distance from car/taxi into venue where you have either sat down all night chatting at a table or its been so crowded when you are walking around you realise you could have worn your ruddy slippers and no one would have noticed!

Hope you have a great night out and have lots of fun.

You lovely people thank you all for making me feel so much more positive.
I think the wedges idea is a good one, might sort of balance things out! Also might stop me falling over if I have one too manyWink

It's also true that no one's going to be looking, if they are they won't be thinking about my shoes, they'll be thinking what the hell is that old bat doing in a club, well by that time of night I won't care!

My dear friend who's about your size looks fucking fabulous in her stilettos. If you like them then wear them. Height is most slimming.
