If you were me (tall)...what would you wear?

Hi ladies, hope it's ok just jumping in, have been having a good read of all your posts for a while :)

So, I'm 6ft, size 10-12, size 6 feet, and I'm 38. I've got long limbs (think Elle McPherson) and a small frame so things can swamp me.

Currently struggling the most with work clothes, I work in a local gov environment, men wear trousers and a smart shirt (no tie).... And I am stuck, either looking like a scruff or a frump in dated clothes.

I feel most like a frump in plain suits ( have one from long tall Sally that fits great), I tend to buy what ..so slim trousers and cardigans from next tall range with a boring jersey top and maybe a necklace. That used to look ok 10yrs ago...but now it doesn't in my mind!

Anyone? I would just love to bin it all and start again tbh! I've been the same weight since I was 21 and I think I am stuck in a (boring) time warp...

I'm a shortie and not versed in the ways of the tall, but by way of a bump, some feeble offerings

this is nice
this with a blazer? maybe?
lovely blouse like the mint too (+camisole)
this?

Low waisted dresses.
Shirt dresses
Wide legged, low waist trousers with round neck tops!!

Think duchess of Cambridge..

ZaraW · 05/06/2013 05:52

I kind of like this and they do it in their tall range.

I'm 6ft as well but mostly leggy, I tend to wear a lot of dresses for work. Either with a cardigan or suit jacket over or yday I wore a black shift with a white shirt under. I work in a very formal environment but do try and get a bit of colour in rather than all just black, my favourite jacket is a berry coloured one from next, not a tall one but it fits fine.

Thanks for replying ladies :)

Some new ideas there...so thanks, will check out top shop and dotty p's offerings, id not spotted those items when looking, fresh eyes are good ! I need a trip to Oxford street (with the rest of the world!) to check out the tall concessions in the shops

I have never come across Crew....thanks for that, looks good, but it looks quite expensive on there for basic bits..though I am so desperate for a change I might get a few bits to try!

Off to put my (frumpy) work clothes on :(

Banana republic has a tall range - sign up for their newsletter and you will get frequent offers of 25% off codes.

EeyoreIsh · 05/06/2013 07:17

I'm tall too, and I wear lots of dresses for work wear. M&S do good ones (in between the per una shit).

Passthecake30 · 05/06/2013 20:17

Went to Oxford street today...returned back empty handed and totally demoralised! Top shops tall offerings are no way work appropriate...and dotty ps are now on line only. Though tbh I'm not sure that there is that much out for me atm anyway- shirts with a shorter front and dresses with high waist bands are not quite made with 6 footers in mind!

Will have a look at M&S dresses, and banana republic -didn't know they did a tall range! Thanks ladies x

I am 6 feet tall and never wear dresses as I feel overdressed in them. I have to be smartish for work most of the time, so wear trousers- Next Tall, Zara.

Passthecake30 · 05/06/2013 20:33

What tops do you wear with them? Tbh I am more comfortable in trousers, but they are mostly boring black in the tall ranges and then anything too light and patterned look wrong...

OP posts:
Mrsrobertduvall · 05/06/2013 20:39

Mine are usually black and grey Grin
i have a number of tops from Mint Velvet, Warehouse, Mango and Wallis which look ok....mainly black based but with some colour in too.

I have a black straight jersey maxi skirt I like...good in hot weather.
Would be nice just to be able to buy anywhere!

Mrsrobertduvall · 05/06/2013 20:40

Oh and in winter I tend to wear black skinny jeans , boots and fitted tunics (not smocky ones)
Suits me so I stick to it.

Passthecake30 · 05/06/2013 20:45

Lol...black thick leggings and fitted jerseys for me too! There is one shape in white stuff that just works for me.

Off to check out mint velvet...

I am quite pale and do actually suit a bit of colour, shame its just not in the shops in my size :(

Pencil skirts and soft blouses. Those are my 'office attire' disclaimer my work is usually nude so only rarely require any attire much less office based

I am same height boobage makes me more curvy and find pencils are my default setting, handy, not too short and easy to pair with casual or smart tops.

Passthecake30 · 05/06/2013 20:49

What shoes with the pencil skirts? I don't like heels...can't walk in them without falling over my ankles (pronating feet!)

I think I am you! Actually an inch and a half shorter but v similar proportions, feet etc.

I like tops from Isabella Oliver. I have their extra long t shirt in a variety of colours for layering, but a lot of their tops and dresses are cut reasonably long and slim.

A lot of premium denim brands are long with the expectation most people will get them altered. I have j brand and Paige jeans that are long enough and really like nobody cult skinnies. I do have some slim trousers by jeans manufacturers which are fine for work. I buy in Donna Ida/selfridges/Harvey nicks sales so expecting to pick up a couple of pairs shortly.

I do virtually all my shopping online and return a lot. I think high street is very depressing when you are tall.

New Look have a wide tall range online but not in stores if you want cheap throwaway fashion.

Have you also looked at massimo dutti? Same ownership as Zara so similar longish cut, but better quality.

Also the blogger does my bum look 40 in this has a similar figure. She shops inexhaustibly so I've found her really good for highlighting things that come up long.

Also uniqlo good for plain basics, but not an obvious place to think of.

Ballet flats look grand even on my size 7's
