Maxi dresses...sigh. Who are they really designed for?

I thought I would fall into the right criteria. I'm 5ft 9 so they don't swamp me. However I've also put weight on, and am rather norky. I have never found one that is entirely flattering. I've tried all the styles. The worst for me is the nipped in (elasticated) waist, or the bandeau bodice, with my boobs, I just look like a shelf with a marquee hanging off it.. Most flattering is a crossover style bodice / v-neckline. But even then, it's not great. Should I give up?

Also, v hard to find ones that are proper maxi. Most end up ankle length or mid calf. I have long out of proportion legs and short squat fat body

what about jersey tank style(like a vest that just kept on going)

i like these best - unfussy, simple, so as chic as it's gonna get tbh

h and m have some like this, their website is crap so go in store storeif you can bear it

I have a lovely jersey one from Monsoon which is amazing. All others are rubbish and I have carried out extensive research.

midi length is where it is at this year if you give a shit about that kind of thing

Can highly recommend the one Chibi mentioned. I am 5'10" and a bit, size 14-16 with 36 e norms and this is just perfect. Having searches high and low for the right maxi dress, £13 from H&M wins it for me!

ooh that I do like. thanks. I recently got a leopard print one from them but the bust is ruched/ bandeau style and it's horrendous, adds stones to me!
