Outfit ideas for a weekend family bbq with judgmental relatives?

Hi all,

First post, just joined today!

As I said in the subject line, would like ideas on what would be good to wear...some relatives will be there who are very critical and judgmental so would like to look really nice. Not formal - but cool and stylish without looking like i tried to hard! I have also slimmed down a bit recently (I'm now 9st and 5'4) and I'd like to showcase that without being obvious...

I just got a nice ted baker black blazer that fits really nicely, was thinking of that with grey skinny jeans, red patent flats (or maybe heels would be better?) and a tight-ish top - t-shirt/tank/patterned/bright block colour....

or maybe a dress would be better?

all thoughts/suggestions welcome.

thanks!

No to heels, unless they are wedges. No to anything 'sexy' looking. A little dress and a denim jacket, or dressed down skinnies would be fine.

thanks for that! sounds good...maybe a should get a denim jkt for the summer...

Make sure you cinch in the waist with a belt to show off your newfound skinniness!

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 31/05/2013 13:18

Love this look

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 31/05/2013 13:20

or this

Could wear a black column maxi if you didn't want all your legs out

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 31/05/2013 13:21

this sort of thing but without the tacky belt

jaglo · 31/05/2013 15:25

Remus Lupin thanks so much for all those suggestions. I'm following you on Pinterest now! Love your pins!

I particularly love the first two looks - i was thinking of something like that but i just wasn't able to articulate it...!

Thanks so much again for all the ideas and inspiration

Thanks, Jaglo. Who are you? I'll follow you back!

LulaPalooza · 31/05/2013 17:41

I think the blazer/ skinnies/ flats look sounds cool.

MrsLettuce · 31/05/2013 17:43

Listen to Remus, she knows her stuff.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 31/05/2013 17:46

Mrs L - I am currently wearing cropped skinnies with the button undone because I ate too much lunch, and a big baggy t-shirt. I AM well accessorised though! :)

MrsLettuce · 31/05/2013 17:52

heehee. I'm wearing a pre-DC bikini, art deco-ish short dressing gown and a hilda ogden-esqe headscarf. Presumably me lippy is also 1/2 gorn. Thankfully only the DC are here to witness it. Couldn't hack the heat!

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 31/05/2013 17:58

:) Off to the pub later. What shall I wear? Needs to be based around flats, as we'll be walking.

MrsLettuce · 31/05/2013 18:02

(is all black and white though)

Dunno, we rarely agree do we! I'd say anything apart from skinnies and a naice top Wink Surely something like you linked above would be good? Haven't been in a british pub for 10 or more years. Miss 'em.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 31/05/2013 18:07

Yes, am bored of skinnies except with super high heels. Most of my clothes are v v wintry though.

Ashoething · 31/05/2013 18:38

I would say yes to a summery dress and denim jacket but would also pair it with wedges-I luffs a wedge in the summer.

MrsLettuce · 31/05/2013 18:42

Yeah, maybe wedges and flats in your bag for home time?

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 31/05/2013 18:48

I'm dressed! WC jersey dress and denim jacket - tbh I think I might just wear my Converse! My favourite wedges are not v comfortable and I cba to carry them then change. Have got some comfy sandals (I am indeed an OAP!) but cba to paint my toe nails. I have skinny ankles so am told I can get away with low tops and a skirt. Will wear red lippy and lots of bangles.

Have fun!
