Hairdresser did what I asked but I HATE it - do I have options?

I have been highlighting my hair for years. The natural colour is a mid brown but it hasn't been natural for 20 odd years!

I felt I was ready for a change so asked the hairdresser to put my natural shade with a few lowlights in. Well if this is what I look like naturally then I'm screwed. Sad. It's so dark, I feel I've aged 10 years.

My ultimate goal is very softly highlighted hair using dark brown, mid brown, a few blondes. I always ended up with a full head of very blonde highlights so thought I would try another hairdresser.

I've been washing with head and shoulders since last night when I got it done.

If I don't like it too dark and don't want too blonde do I have any options? I'm really sad about it today as I feel so, I don't know, ugly?

Have you tried googling for pictures of colour you like? It sounds like a communication problem- not too dark and not to blonde is very vague.
Get some pictures then discuss using the charts with colour samples and try and be clearer about what you want.

You only got it done last night.

Wait a little bit.

If you haven't seen your natural hair colour for 20 years then it is going to be a shock.

See how you feel next week, then if you still hate it go back with pictures of the sorts of colours that you like (bearing in mind that the colours you like on other people make not suit you, so you'll have to come to a compromise).

Same thing happened to me. Last time it was just too dark. Go back and ask them to put some blonde in to lift it. Or you can buy a lightening shampoo. John Frieda does one called go blonder or something. It won't bleach but does lift the colour eventually if you use regularly.

I'd let it settle a bit and also look at your make up if you wear it.

I went darker a few years back and had to radically change my make up.

But ultimately I went blonder again as just didn't feel like me with brown hair.

Are you after Jennifer Aniston type hair - colour-wise?

Pinkflipflop · 29/05/2013 08:59

Thanks for the advice.

mrscb I love Jennifer annistons hair but a few shades darker! I don't want it too light, too dark, too streaky! Ahhh.

I feel a mess!

Well, I'd start googling to find the exact type of colour you're after and then take that photo to the hairdressers and ask them how to achieve that.

But much sympathy, my hairdresser who is usually brilliant hasn't given me a brilliant cut. My fringe is too short and I feel frumpy.

Same thing happened to me last week, I asked for natural tones with a touch of really blonde and its horrible. Totally stripy down the parting and too ashy, not golden enough. Totally my fault for not communicating it properly.

I'll have to live with it for a month until I have some more money, then go and ask for an all over colour to even it up. Confused

I would go back and say you're not happy with the colour. It will be no problem to add a few lighter highlights. This has happened to me in the past, and I have not had to pay. It sounds like you were actually envisaging a lighter colour, and that the lowlights have not lightened it enough.

Pinkflipflop · 29/05/2013 12:05

Right I phoned the hairdresser and they are going to put some highlights in the front section for me tomorrow.

How do I avoid ending up with blonde streaks? Is there such a thing a dark blonde highlights?

Yes there are dark blonde highlights but be sure the HD doesn't give you a reddy tone (unless you like that Grin) I went to very expensive HD in Fr. and they gave me reddy toned highlights I was Shock.
