If you saw someone with a Louis Vuitton bag ...

... and it was a fairly small bag, and the person was obviously not a millionaire, but just sort of pretty average, would you assume it was a fake?

I've wanted one all my life Blush, and have A PLAN. I'm having a HUGE wardrobe clearout and am going to put the money I get from getting rid of heaps of clobber and unworn shoes towards a Posh Bag (I've never had one), and have my heart set on LV, but DH says there's no point because people will just assume it's not real.

What d'you think? Are my girlish dreams all for naught?

horseonabeach

Re bag liners, most department stores sell them as do amazon and eBay.

If you buy premium brands often you can purchase bag liners through them

Hope this helps Smile

horseonabeach · 28/05/2013 21:47

Great am googling, thanks barbie!

SignoraStronza · 28/05/2013 21:48

Nah, would assume she's Milanese and had been living on potatoes for the last couple of months .

Mominatrix · 28/05/2013 21:48

LV do have lies without obvious logos - epi leather being one example. Take a browse in their stores and pick a style which you love. Personally, I'd love a LV Sophia Coppola - a bag I would switch labels for.

HauntedArmchairOfDoom · 28/05/2013 21:49

Thanks Ivy :)

DH is being quite sweet actually. He pointed out I don't spend money on holidays or gigs or anything and it's no worse than spending money on a hobby. I think he just thinks it needs to be obviously non-fake but Lord knows how you go about that!

I have just had a look at how much a vintage Chanel 2.55 costs. DH had to administer some basic CPR Shock

Signora that's so perfect! And without the Milanese detail pretty much what I'm going to do Grin

Love that Sophia Coppola, Mominatrix. It's not right for me (I need a cross body bag) but it's properly beautiful and I can't imagine anyone thinking it was a rip-off.

Mominatrix · 28/05/2013 21:51

Lines, not lies! I really cannot type.

Barbie1 · 28/05/2013 21:52

I think vintage is more expensive then buying it new Shock

I nearly died when dh gave me mine!

Thankfully we moved to Paris so have been using it a lot.

My dd aged 3 is go

Barbie1 · 28/05/2013 21:52

Ing to have one amazing collection of bags in the future...if I decide to share Wink

HauntedArmchairOfDoom · 28/05/2013 21:54

Oh look, call off the search. I think I'll have one of these

Barbie1 · 28/05/2013 21:56

Excellent

Maggie thatcher chic is all the rage didn't you know Grin

MoodyDidIt · 28/05/2013 21:56

i would think fake :( sorry

there are sooooo many about and i think they must be really easy to fake, half the mums at my dcs school have them :/

FrugalFashionista · 28/05/2013 21:58

Haunted if it will take you some time to save up, do take the time to read Deluxe - How Luxury Lost Its Luster by Dana Thomas. It is an excellent book and will make you think things through before committing to buy.

I have a 2.55 and it's one of those uniform type bags. Nothing particularly original or unique about it, it's something worn because of other people (rather like a suit worn to work) more than a deep expression of personal style and values (I don't believe in any of that Coco shtick any more - except that she was clearly a shrewd businesswoman). I also have several Dior bags, and just because you don't see many others around, I much prefer them. But the leather in luxury bags wears out just like any other leather - wear and tear will show and these bags won't necessarily age well.

I much prefer cheaper bags that can be soaked in rain and that will never need any type of leather protector or babying. My humble Longchamps, Zatchels and Sisleys and a cheap vintage satchel from eBay seem completely indestructible. I simply feel freer and happier wearing them.

Barbie1 · 28/05/2013 21:59

What's happened to tanner krolle Shock

I have two lovely soft bags from them, nothing like what is on their web page at the moment.

I guess they aren't showing the full range and only the bespoke stuff Hmm

KatherineLacey · 28/05/2013 22:01

If the rest of you looks stylish, then would probably think real. I have a couple of friends with real ones. But the logo is incredibly over-copied that it does often raise a presumption of 'fake'. But people in the know will know it's real (I wouldn't be able to tell). I like the satchel style of it.

badblueeyeliner · 28/05/2013 22:01

The Sophia Coppola LV is amazing! Is it trillions of pounds?

I just bought this (with a discount). Think it's lovely but am not sure about it as the shoulder strap is short - sits between my waist and armpit as opposed to by my hip which I prefer m.my-wardrobe.com/mt/www.my-wardrobe.com/dkny/crosby-tubular-top-zip-tote-402732

santamarianovella · 28/05/2013 22:04

hunted i love LV bags, they are very very well made ,and get this, vintage LV is in very high demand.
if you like the bag then go for it! i know someone who is very rich but buys fake chanel and birkin all the time!
i like the neverfull design its so elegant i saw someone carrying it the other day and she had a bright lime scarf tied on the straps very elegant!

barbie the bag liner you mentioned is it like a tidy with pockets?i bought one from galaries lafaytte last year, but have not seen it here.

Frugal that's a good tip and I'll take a squint at the book. And I do know what you mean (about the value of cheap reliable bags). I have those though, see?! I'd like the choice. And I think there is a quality of armour in beautiful and valuable pieces. I have a stunning designer watch that's a real show-stopper and I wear it when I know I'm going to be feeling nervous, even though it's so heavy it gives me sprain.

I like that there bag, Santamaria - but yes why do they do that weird strap length Confused. I wonder if those are supposed to be worn in the crook of the elbow in manner of the Olsen twins and whatnot.

OP posts:
GTbaby · 28/05/2013 22:10

Hunted love the bag choice. Not an obvious fake style.
I bought a LV last after similar consideration as there are so many fakes out there.

Go for it!

Mominatrix · 28/05/2013 22:23

Triumph, I'm certain that you love you bag, but if you saw and touched a real birkin, you'd see that the difference is pretty obvious. I see loads of fake birkins and can spot them a mile away. Yes, there are some super fakes out there, but they are not the ones which can be purchased for a couple hundred quit - more like a couple thousand. Please check out the Hermes Festival de Metiers currently at the Saachi Gallery - you will see the work which goes into making one of these bags(can actually see a bag being made and speak to one of the artisans), and get to feel and smell the leathers which are chosen.

Frugal, not to be argumentative, but my bags are not babied - they are drenched in rain, taken to the playground, flung about, and still in amazing condition - some after 10+ years of (ab)use. Take a look at some auction sites for box leather bags which are 30+ years old, and that is where you see the beauty of these bags. The workmanship of Hermes is praised even in Deluxe.

HauntedArmchairOfDoom · 28/05/2013 22:26

I once read that Hermes have their own herds of cows which are treated like emperors, in order to get the best hide for their bags. If this isn't true please never, ever tell me, because believing it makes life worth living.

OP it's obvious you've thought about this a lot and it's not a decision you're making on a whim. This means something to you.

The style of the bag you posted makes it less fakey like too. It's nice.

For those reasons I think, on reflection, you should get it. And I'm really not a designer bag person. And REALLY not an LV person.
