Could someone please help me find a sundress?

I would like to find a good classic sundress for wearing over a bikini on holiday, but solid enough (not a beach dress or see through) to wear in a city on very hot days for sightseeing. I have just spent an hour searching at my usual online shops with no luck

I would like knee length or below the knee, straps or perhaps even a halterneck, preferably a loose fitting, not a maxi and not jersey (I am thinking crisp cotton). It can't be too young in style and I would like a pattern or at least some detailing. I think in my head its a slightly fifties style.

Reading back, no wonder I can't find it, it seems impossible. Anyone seen anything?

Fat Face's "Serena" sundresses could fit-the-bill:

Sorry, rubbish at links... www.fatface.com/dresses/serena-hummingbird-dress/invt/42421?colour=Navy

Hmm, I think that one is a little substantial. I think I need it a little bit more floaty or softer than that.

Joe Browns have some lovely stuff which seems to fit the bill:

Here's a few I liked particularly the 3rd one.

or this?

Not quite what I am looking for. This is almost right, but I don't like the pattern and its way too expensive, but I love love the shape.

i have these - or versions of them they are pretty much fail safe and sooo brilliant, easy with sandals or wedges easy to throw on for a bit of sightseeing can be crumpled up or rolled up and thrown in a beach bag I ve found them so great. well worth it.

I bought some from Primark for a fiver last year. My favourite is green broiderie anglaise and is lined with a thin cotton lining, it's lovely. They may have some in this year again.

landofsoapandglory · 27/05/2013 16:27

Joe Browns have an ebay shop, they have quite a few styles in.

landofsoapandglory · 27/05/2013 16:36

This perhaps? There are a few different colours, too.

Lambzig · 27/05/2013 17:17

Thanks for the links. Joe Browns is a little young for me. I really like the last one, but its way too short. I am the wrong side of 40 to show my knees (although my knees weren't worth looking at when I was twenty either).

have a gander at lady V online very very pretty tea dresses / swing dresses etc very 1950's

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 27/05/2013 18:09

Love this but probably too short

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 27/05/2013 18:10

Off brief but too sweet to ignore!

FarleyD · 27/05/2013 18:55

Sorry, forgot to tick little box!

Lambzig · 27/05/2013 19:17

Thanks for the links. They are all a bit short and I definitely want strappy of some sort.

I am now having delusions of making it myself - expect I couldn't find a pattern either.

Have you looked on boden? If you went for a long length dress the length would probably be about right for you on some of their summer dresses.

Lambzig · 27/05/2013 19:26

Yes, I looked in Boden, but they don't have anything. Oh I hate it when you have a dress in your head and it doesn't exist in real life.

storynanny · 27/05/2013 19:47

how about going for a maxi dress and cutting off to the length you want? That way you would have more to choose from.

Anything here ?

landofsoapandglory · 27/05/2013 20:03

How tall are you? This one is knee length on the 5'9" model.
