What are you supposed to wear on top of 'going-out' dresses?

I wear dresses a lot. I live in England. Therefore the dresses on their own tend to be chilly.

For work dresses, I wear a blazer or jacket. For weekend dresses, maybe a cardi. For the life of me I cannot work out what you're supposed to do with a cocktail dress.

I suspect a cardi is wrong? In the nineties I used to be wedded to the pashmina, but that's wrong too now, isn't it? The answer cannot simply be 'just get cold' can it?

Oooh well! I have a couple of small velvet shrug things, or a vintage lace shrug thing, a couple of fake fur jackets, a couple of sequin shrug things, a very neat fitted midnight blue velvet blazer. Plus some thermal vests if I can get away with them under whatever I am wearing.
I have to add these have been collected over a few years and they go with various styles of dresses and I get chilly!

My plan for weddings in chilly churches is to wear a long dress and leggings underneath...

I think a bolero is basically "a short cardigan that doesn't do up", so it comes only part way down your back.

Had to hunt around my blog but eventually found this post:

The last photo shows what I mean in my earlier post about a soft denim shirt over a dress, I used a belt to try to make it a bit smarter. I'm 31 now so trying to bridge the gap between too young/ too frumpy! Not sure I always get it right but hey ho! [big grin]
