Superdrug coconut oil - comedogenic?

I've just bought a tub of this - smells divine and looks as if I'll be fine using it on my body and hair but what about my face?

Ingredients are : coconut oil, parfum and coumarin (which according to wikipedia is a ?fragrant organic chemical compound?)

Will I erupt in spots? My skin (despite me being mid-40s) still gets angry spots at times so is this likely to trigger them?

I used it on my hair and scalp and it made the edges of my face and my eyelids horribly itchy. It's the only product I've ever been sensitive to.

When I used it on my hair it made it lovely and frizz free, but it brought me out in terrible spots after having my head and face on the pillow so I haven't bothered since

I have been using it for years and I have really good skin. I use it on my hair to stop friz and on my hands and cuticles. I love the stuff and was in superdrug yesterday stocking up.

They fragrance it to make it smell like coconut [grr] bloody stupid thing to do in my opinion, noone minds if their coconut oil is odourless, surely.

Anyway, thus far fine for me. Have yet to use it on face though, hair mainly over here.

Depends on whether the coconut oil is refined or not (check the label).

Refined coconut oil is highly comedogenic and I wouldn't be putting it anywhere near my face.

But unrefined coconut oil is non pore clogging and is actually recommended as an anti acne treatment.

Personally I'm not a fan - I find it sits on the surface of the skin for a long time and leaves a lot of residue. But lots of people love it.

Buy the pure coconut oil, it is much better. They even sell it in Tesco.

Thanks everyone - I don't think I'll risk it on my face then. I'll stick to using it on my body (cautiously) and hair.

I buy nutiva extra-virgin cocount oil from Amazon. I use it on my hands, nails, feet, face, body, hair, cook with it, and actually eat 3 tbsps a day! (I have an underactive thyroid and it boosts my metabolism.)

SingingSilver - please tell me more about it boosting your metabolism; I'm really interested as I also suffer with an underative thyroid and it makes losing weight a big issue.

Hi, I'm not too sure on the science, it may be that it helps convert T3 to T4, but it raises your body temperature slightly (tested this myself and it's true) which boosts the metabolism. I was wary about 3tbsp of pure fat helping me feel better but it seems to be and I haven't gained any weight.

Are you on thyroxine? A major thing I found out recently was that swallowing your tablet first thing in the morning with a full glass of vitamin c (the effervescent tablets they sell in chemists) helps with the conversion, and I wait at least an hour before eating anything. Many people have had success with taking their meds before going to bed, and letting it absorb all night, but I don't have the discipline for that because I like my evening munchies, and you're supposed to leave 3 hours after eating before taking meds.

Oh, another recommendation is to eat one brazil nut a day! Do you ever suffer muscle cramps? I was getting them badly in my neck and shoulders, and found that thyroxine leaches selenium from the body which leads to muscle cramps over time. One brazil nut contains all the selenium you need for a day. I was paying osteos and chiros to fix my neck and in the end it took one nut a day!

Shining Silver - that is all really useful information for me. I am on 150 mcg of thyroxine a day and nobody has ever explained anything to me - not even when to take the tablets and I have been taking them for over ten years. (This might be due to the fact that I am in my 60s and my gut reaction is just do what the gp says, if you see what I mean).

I am currently on the Alizonne diet and losing weight really well, so I will keep all the info in mind for when I finish - don't want to do anything in the short term to jeopardise my progress. I do gets cramps in my legs so will certainly try the brazil nut a day when I finish. You have also inspired me to do some more research and reading. Thanks very much for your help.
