Home highlighting kits - advice needed please

Have just had my hair highlighted 2 weeks ago at a local hair salon and tbh am not that impressed with it. I have short hair, the highlights just don't look great and don't do enough to cover grey. It also cost a lot (well, I think £76 is quite pricey) so am thinking of getting dh to do home highlights for me. He is no Vidal Sassoon, but I can't justify spending large amounts like this every 6 weeks and not even liking the result.

My quesion is: if I already have tinted highlights, will it be safe to use one of the 2 step kits where you dye all over first and then 'paint' on the highlights?

Am nervous even typing this, my dh is fairly arty but in no way a hairdresser. Am I mad to do this, or can anyone recommend a decent chain of hair salons that don't charge the earth?

Tia,
