Need a dress for a 1940's ball, help!

Im going to a 1940's ball and really have no idea what to wear. Dress code is black tie or vintage. Im a tall size 10, classic pear shaped fat hips and thighs and wobbly mum tum but a good well shaped dress will sort all that out.

Now where to start?

I wouldn't get a 50s dress for a 40s ball...

If you are going to buy new as opposed to vintage (which could get very pricy for ball attire), I'd go for something like this with a fur stole and hair set in waves/rolls.

Original 40s dress

Freddiemisagreatshag · 06/05/2013 14:25

There are 40's style wiggle dresses on the site though if you look Wink

Ooooh tethers, yes thats lovely but is indeed pricey. Budget up to about £100.

Its a VE themed ball some of the dresses which say 1950s look quite suitable?!

Have a look on Vivienne of holloway.

Freddiemisagreatshag · 06/05/2013 14:29

what abut something from oxfam online

tethersend · 06/05/2013 14:31

Just avoid anything with a wide or circle skirt, as these came in in the 1950s- not enough coupons to make one for VE Day Wink

This sort of thing would suit me well but its not very dressed up is it?

would you get away with something like this do you think

tethersend · 06/05/2013 14:54

I'd go for longer length, tbh.

If you prefer shorter, how about this?

piprabbit · 06/05/2013 15:06

This could work, it's the right length, good sleeves and nicely fitted. And a bargianous price if you are a possible size 12.

CajaDeLaMemoria · 06/05/2013 15:11

Ooooh I love that Alice Temperley dress, Piprabbit

piprabbit · 06/05/2013 15:11

Or this if you would prefer something shorter.

smugtandemfeeder · 06/05/2013 15:16

Love the pink one but DH wont authorise the expenditure.

The Alice Temperley one looks v glamorous but makes me feel nervous for some reason. Not sure why.

What's the budget?

piprabbit · 06/05/2013 15:26

Or you channel Marlene Dietrich and wear a tux.

smugtandemfeeder · 06/05/2013 15:26

Well I did say £100 but DH is frowning so lets say £80.

black

Black again

Gold

black again

gold again

All of the above with a fur stole, sparkly earrings and/or brooch, red lippy and set hair would look amazing.

smugtandemfeeder · 06/05/2013 15:36

ooooooooh tethers. LOVE all. ooooooh I do like those.
