Should I dye my hair black?

Had my hair black back when I was a teen, it's been lots of colours since!
Had a couple of times recently when the colour hasn't come out how I imagined so was talking to DH & he suggested black & it got me thinking.

Is it too 'teen goth' or could I carry it off?

I think it really depends on your skin tone and how willing you are to keep dying it black once you've done it. If you've done it before and it looked good then go for it.

Noooo! Not flattering on anyone. When men say 'black hair' they mean dark brunette like Nigella, Penelope Cruz or Carla off Corrie. Find a shade of brunette that suits your skin tone. Black is way too harsh for summer too...

Definitely not jet black, looks too way too witchy and harsh unless you're absolutely drop dead stunning (like Andrea Corr in the 90s as pp said).

Tbh, I think true black really only suits people of Asian or Oriental heritage. Brunette is much more flattering.

I wouldn't, dyed black hair is too flat. Go for the dark brown next to the black.

No, as others have said, jet black is too harsh.

Even when you think someone has black hair, there is usually tones of red or brown in it when you see it in the sun.

What I'd really like is red streaks in very dark/black hair but I don't know if work would appreciate that!

Dark brunette is the 'safe' way to go

I think if you're looking to have a 'rock chick' look then its got to be black, or black with red streaks would be fine too

The rules of 'ageing' hair colours don't really apply if you're going for an 'alternative' look, IMO.

Another thing about black is you need to wear a shedload of slap to avoid looking like a corpse and look like you're going bald when the roots come in. I'd go for darkest brown if I were you.

My natural colour is black but I've been redy brown for years.
I decided to go back to my natural colour just before Christmas and it was awful. Really washed me out and made me look a bit witchy. I was so surprised because I thought that my natural colour would suit me

Absolute pig to cover up as well, ended up stripping all the colour out of my hair just to get rid, though them might just have been the brand i used.

I've been black for years (naturally v dark brown) and always wished I could go lighter, but it was going to cost me over £150 to get it lightened. I tried just growing it out, but it looked terrible with grey brown roots and black ends.

I recently had it lightened as part of a makeover and dyed a reddish-purple, but the colour keeps fading and going gingery brown, so I'm seriously considering going back to black (there's a song in there somewhere!)

However, I know it will mean that I'm unlikely to ever have another colour. Once you go black...etc Be prepared that if you do it, you might be stuck with it unless you can afford to have it professionally stripped and recoloured.
