Would you wear a black dress like this to a wedding?

One like This one or this one?

Although they're black I think the lace and full skirt makes them less severe...but I could be wrong. It's not a very formal, traditional wedding, but I don't want to look funereal.

(I'd cover up the back of the low back one until it's party time!)

No problem with black to a wedding in general though.

Plathism · 01/05/2013 16:51

Yes am planning on wearing flats GetOrf, am not into clod hoppers Grin Thanks for all the opinions!

no

cafecito · 01/05/2013 16:52

as in, not for a wedding - maybe fine if there's an evening reception at the wedding, or a party. but the wedding itself, I just don't think it's appropriate

GetOrfMoiLand · 01/05/2013 16:53

I sound like my great aunt Nancy saying clod hoppers.

i really don't like those horrible great big platform shoes people wear. Roll on when they go out of fashion.

cafecito · 01/05/2013 16:55

something like this would be better imo if you want black, or anything with a floral or lighter print on top. all black is not quite right traditionalist grumpy twentysomething

ArbitraryUsername · 01/05/2013 16:57

Top shop don't appear to have a single non-black dress (or at least black and white) for sale at the moment.

Oasis have lots of skater-ish style dresses in more weddingy colours/patterns.

Plathism · 01/05/2013 16:58

It's a good description GetOrf! I hate them. But I can't walk in heels anyway, and can't be arsed to learn.

I'm starting to agree with you and cafe that it's not the black colour per se, more the eveningyness of them that doesn't feel quite right. May just keep one for parties. It's not the sexiness of them that bothers me because I think they'll look reasonably demure on a petite, small chested person in ballet flats.

No - wouldn't wear black to a wedding. Just not right IMO. Also, if you're in any of the photos, and everyone is in colourful clothing, or pale clothing, you'll stand out like a sore thumb (like my ex-SIL did at my wedding).

Plathism · 01/05/2013 17:01

Arbitrary am just looking at Oasis, they have loads of new things in since I last looked and some definite possibilites - cheers :)

Yeah. There's some really nice stuff that would look lovely with ballet flats (and possibly a cardigan).

Plathism · 01/05/2013 17:11

Just ordered two cobalt blue lacy/skater type dresses and two floaty emerald green ones to try Grin 20% off today too! Thanks again!

Yes, I'd wear black to a wedding. But the dresses you linked to are the sort of things my teens would wear - unless you are 18 or younger I'd say they are too short.

cleoowen · 01/05/2013 17:50

Wouldn't wear black to a wedding myself but know lots of people who do. IMO it doesn't look very wedding like but the second one is quite nice.

whiteandyellowiris · 01/05/2013 17:53

no i would feel rude, its a nice dress though, get it for another time

Wishiwasanheiress · 01/05/2013 17:57

If worried about colour just check on brides preference. Some don't care, some really do!

I like both dresses. I'd do heels and hats. But then they dress up where I live rather than down. It's a wedding, why would u not make an effort? :)

Plathism · 01/05/2013 23:10

Wish I know the bride won't mind black, I'm thinking of the families really. I have some more colourful dresses on the way to try now but I do love the TS ones :)

OP posts:
MoonlightandRoses · 01/05/2013 23:28

If the bride doesn't mind then it shouldn't be an issue really.

If you want to try on a few more things though then this dress is really rather fabulous on (even though it looks cheap and nasty on the web-site) and comes in a few colours (although the navy is nicest). Awear are quite 'traditional' on sizing though (i.e. their 8 is really an 8 and not a 10 IYSWIM) if you do want to risk trying one.

Plathism · 02/05/2013 10:18

Moonlight my friend has that dress, it does look gorgeous on! Would you say the measurements they give on their sizing chart are accurate? If it is their 8 should be fine.

OP posts:
Crutchlow35 · 02/05/2013 10:39

Yes wear what you want. I hate all this shite about what you can and can't wear. It is a day out FFS. I couldn't give a toss about what people wore as long as they enjoyed themselves. I care even less about what other people think.

So yes, wear what you like and sod everyone else.

MoonlightandRoses · 02/05/2013 13:16

Actually, having looked at the measurements, I'm now very confused as it looks from the chart as though a 10 should have fitted me (have 33/34 in bust and haven't dared measure my waist in quite some time, but actually, the 8 fitted well and the 10 was slightly loose (tried the 6 in hopes, but it was rather, umm, figure-hugging to put it mildly).

Sorry, probably not much help for you, but think I am going to hunt down a chocolate bar! Grin

Plathism · 02/05/2013 13:39

Moonlight it looks like they have a different size chart depending whether you're looking at the mobile site or the normal site! The size chart on the normal site has the smaller measurements, like you said, with their 10 corresponding to a modern 8, but the measurements on the mobile site correspond to standard modern sizes. Helpful Hmm

MoonlightandRoses · 02/05/2013 17:30

How random. Think the 8 should fit though.

IllegalYoniFarm · 02/05/2013 17:32

My MIL wore black to our wedding!

Moominsarehippos · 02/05/2013 17:46

I worked with someone who went to a wedding where the MIL turned up if full funeral attire (black veil etc) and bawled throughout the ceremony. She wasn't too keen on the match apparently.
