Is this a good skincare shopping list, or am I being a sheep? Baaaaaaaaahh

I'm 50 with neglected skin, but I have funds

I've been lurking and seen this lot raved about so was thinking of getting it, but is it right for me? Skin is normalish, occasional spots, some wrinkles.

My shopping list:

Avene gentle gel cleanser (for cleansing morning and evening)
A Sonicleanse (or do I not need this?)
Immortelle eye cream (for day and night?)

Neal's Yard Rose Facial Oil (not sure when to put this on, actually)
Olay Regenerist serum then La Roche Posay Cicaplast moisturiser (is that how its done - one on top of the other?)
L'Oreal age perfect cell renew in the gold tub (not sure when to put this on either)
Bravura night cream (for night time, I presume)

Does this lot seem worth getting? Will it make my skin look gorgeous better?

My two pennies worth:

I don't use the facial wash, but I love Aveeno products. The body lotion is great, so def worth a try.

NY rose facial oil is lovely. I recently swapped to the more pricey Clarins lotus oil, which is lush ('twas a gift) but will go back to NY when it runs out. I massage it in to my face every other night before bed.

Looks like a good list to me but my advice would be to try each new thing on its own so you can judge the effects, because if you have a reaction to any, or find your skin's drying out or breaking out, you won't know what's causing it. Also, I find exposing my skin to lots of new products at once can make it red and sensitised.

Cleanser - serum - oil - moisturiser

Hmm, I'd be wary of relying on opinions here as the mn'er giving the rave review might be of a totally different age, skin type etc to you.

Check reviews elsewhere. I know make up alley for example let's you select reviews by age and skin type etc so you might get a better feel for how some of those products will work for you.

Una Brennan at Boots, absolutely wonderful. Definitely worth a try. Not too many £££ and it has transformed my skin.

Ooooh, I've been looking at the Una Brennan range and wondering. Might give a couple of items a try. here's a pre cleansing oil that looks interesting.

Una Brennan rose face oil and rose day cream are brilliant. If you mean Clarisonic they are also ace and may I suggest philosophy purity cleanser? :)

I think it's too much. Whacking all that lot onto your face in a day will overload it, and you won't be able to tell what's agreeing with you and anything that isn't.

Tbh I'd start with the cleanser and the Neal's Yard oil, and then add other things in a month or two.

If you have funds I would recommend going either to a clarins counter ££ or space nk£££ and having a skin consultation and by what you like that they recommend. Don't feel you have to buy everything they recommend - its fine to buy a couple of products and note the rest (also fine not to buy anything!)

I tend to wonder past looking for a counter assistant who looks experienced and whose look I like. My experience with clarins is the higher end the store the better trained the staff, so john lewis better than boots.

Have fun - I had a grown up skincare rethink a few years ago and if you can afford it it is a lovely thing to do.

Katy- Clarins and the stores themselves will pick the staff to fit the store iykwim? So they will pick a certain type to work in jl and a different type for boots. They all get the same training doesn't always follow that it's sunk in

If you go for a face oil, apply it sparingly to a damp face and it will sink in quickly and work more effectively.

What are you using at the moment?

I agree with the advice upthread, don't get and start using everything at once - you won't know what's helping/hindering/making sod all difference to your skin. Cleanser, oil and moisturiser is more than enough for now.

What were you using prior to this? What's your usual skin care routine?

I reckon you're missing an exfoliator off this list - if you went for Liz Earle Cleanse & Polish, then you that could be your cleanser and exfoliator in one, rather than the Aveeno?

I would also be adding fish oil and vitamin D into my diet for good skin from the inside.

Also I'd lose the Olay and Loreal stuff - just a lot of chemicals!

If you are "starting from scratch" with skincare, it is better, IMO, to buy from a single range. Avène or La Roche Posay are good value for money. Buy a cleanser, an eye cream, a night cream and a day cream to start with, and use them religiously.

If you buy a clarisonic you won't need a separate exfoliator. Just sayin' :)

Don't change it all at once.
Too much for the skin to deal with.
If you get irritations you'll never know what caused it.

Aveeno products are lovely.

Ime you need;

Hot cloth cleanser, with lots of cut up Muslins from boots.
A moisturiser
Tretinoin/retin A cream
Daily sunscreen, SPF 30 or above with 5 star/maximum UVA protection. I even put it on if I'm not leaving the house.

I use Clarins and find them good.

If, as you say, you have funds I wouldn't mess about with cheaper bits and pieces but just go to a Clarins counter and get myself sorted with a few products. If there are any products you're not sure you'll like (eg because of the texture) they are very good about giving samples. They also do great gifts with purchase.

Another option would be to go to Space NK - I've always found their advice good, though I do use them more for make-up than skin care, I guess.

PS Do agree about going to Clarins counters in higher end stores, IYSWIM.

I get mine mostly from Harvey Nichols, Fenwicks, Harrods, Selfridges. They do tend to have even better gifts with purchase there I find.
