What is 'Bench'?

I found some nice sunglasses online, the downside being they are emblazoned with the word 'Bench'. I know nothing about the brand, is it chavvy/sporty/bling/exceedingly youthful/fash-victimy/whatever?

I don't want to embarrass myself (or any 'kids' who might be humiliated to find themselves sharing a logo with the stout, middleaged buggy-pusher standing next to them on the bus)

overpriced stuff for teens/young adults.

blueteddy · 12/05/2006 15:01

I had never heard of it before seeing it in TKmaxx, either!

Nbg · 12/05/2006 15:02

Sold in most catalogues.

MrsBadger · 12/05/2006 15:03

tis Skate.
Stick to thinks with the smaller logos - sunglasses should be fine, but the six-inch high letters down one leg / across arse etc are best left to the kidz.

I had a jumper from them way back in the 90s with a cool asymmetric zip.

cataloguequeen · 12/05/2006 15:03

Urban streetwear...GrinI say if you like it wear it!!

zippitippitoes · 12/05/2006 15:03

I have seen "skirts" the size of belts on which the word bench covers most of the back side..it is teen stuff

bakedpotato · 12/05/2006 18:10

LOL @ 'skate' and 'urban streetwear'

Barely know what these are

DS1 (13) has a T shirt and DD1 (24) has a jacket, if that helps narrow it down for you, bp Grin

GDG · 12/05/2006 18:29

I've got Bench trousers and a Bench zip up fleece. Dh has a couple of Bench t-shirts. My brothers have Bench t-shirts and fleeces too.

Tinker · 12/05/2006 19:03

Stuff for impressionable kids, looks incredibly silly with it written all over your clothes.

notasheep · 12/05/2006 19:09

realised i was definately old when i thought why on earth are people wearing stuff saying benchSad

alittlebitshy · 12/05/2006 19:44

i wondered that today, a (really nice, but v v trendy looking)mum had a NICE (drool) t-shirt with "bench" on it, at music group. I hadn't come across that one before. old at 27 - i say!!!!

zippitippitoes · 12/05/2006 19:45

I have now noticed that ds has a "top" with bench on too..

brimfull · 12/05/2006 19:52

dd 14 has a few bench tops, overpriced teen stuff imo

paddingtonbear1 · 13/05/2006 23:10

errr.. I am 38 and have a bench fleece and a couple of tops. nothing too skimpy tho :)

GDG · 13/05/2006 23:43

I'm 33 and wear the 'tamer' Bench stuff. Nowt wrong with it. Doesn't look mutton!

jampots · 13/05/2006 23:44

its a bit of a chav-ish label i understand like Hooch

Kelly1978 · 13/05/2006 23:46

bench isn't always that cheap tho, I bought the boys bench shorts from house of fraser, (v small logos) and was a bit miffed to see it in TK Maxx! It's a bit annoying how so many designers are seen as chavish now. Sad

snowleopard · 13/05/2006 23:49

I like it for scruffier days - except for the blimmin "Bench" written all over it - I try to find the more subtle items.

Lovely long arms - I'm like a gibbon with my long arms and can rarely find sleeves long enough. Bench do them extra long for that sleeves-over-hands surly teen look.

jampots · 13/05/2006 23:50

i think its more "labels" than designer stuff itself kelly that's seen as chavvy. Consequently anything with Bench or Hooch or Nike scrawled all over it looks "chav" even though the clothes themselves are quite nice

Kelly1978 · 14/05/2006 00:02

I guess you are right jampots though I was beginning to wonder if I was turning into a chav! I walk round Slough, and my children have clothes by the same designers as the local chavs. And they all seem to be pushing trad style prams liek mine too - huge emmaljunga type things. Maybe I should jsut resign to chavdom. Grin

GDG · 14/05/2006 00:58

I am most certainly not a chav. My bench pants have a subtle 'bench' logo on them in the same colour as the pants so hardly noticeable.
