What do you have on the floor in your hall?

I'm putting this in Style because I would like the opinions of stylish people on this one!

What kind of flooring do you have in your hall? If you have a wooden floor is it ok to have carpet on the stairs? Or would that look really bad? Trying to work out what to have in our new house but finding it hard to visualise...

We have wooden flooring through the hall right through to the dining room. we have a deep red carpet on the stairs and it looks lovely. Also 2 dark red rugs.

I wanted tiles, then carpet going up the stairs, but have ended up with carpet, but with a HUGE built in doormat for buggy mud etc.

Angeliz · 11/05/2006 15:01

(I'm thinking of eventually carpeting over the wooden hall to be honest as i think there is too much wood in this house. It was like this when we moved in and we've done sod all yet!!)

(well we don't but that thread title was just dying for someone to type this yes?)

PinkKerPlink · 11/05/2006 15:02

you SO do olive:o

ComeOveneer · 11/05/2006 15:04

Wooden floor and then carpet up the stairs looks good imo (particularly if you have a complementary runner on the wooden floor - just make sure it is antislip).

oliveoil · 11/05/2006 15:04

how very dare you Shock

We have mangy carpet at the mo but are hoping to move and will leave it for the next lot

I would like tiles and a rug

Cam · 11/05/2006 15:04

No Olive, the only thing that sprang to my mind was tiles

Ok then so it's not bad. I think I was worried about continuity, but having carpet in the hall in this house is not very practical. Think a wooden floor would be much easier to keep clean.

Look at the Roger Oates runners they are yummy.....I've got one going down the the kitchen.

oliveoil · 11/05/2006 15:06

lol

I think on wooden stairs, a carpet runner (not sure of the official name) looks good with sort of rods on each stair to keep it in place. Not the full length of the stair, about 3 inches from each side.

Will try and find it as I am explaining very badly.

I have sand coloured tiles and in the middle they make a mosiac thingy. We have wooden stairs with a wrought iron bannister. Carpet is lovely with wooden floor, my sister has this and it looks lovely, her carpet is like a dark terracotta and her floor is beech and looks wonderful!

Tatties · 11/05/2006 15:07

lol, I actually thought people were going to tell me what objects people had left lying around the floor in their hall.

I read this title and thought '2 car seats, 6 pairs of shoes, lots of grit, cat hair, several small toys and a pushchair raincover'. Then I realised you'd put it in 'Style'. Grin

As I am clearly a slovenly housekeeper you probably won't be interested in the fact that I have wood floor and cream carpet on the stairs - bad bad bad idea. Do NOT go with cream.

Ha, ha Tattie, crossed threads with you. I must learn to type faster. Smile

Tatties · 11/05/2006 15:11

OO yes I know exactly what you mean and I think that would be my ideal but there is carpet on the stairs already, no idea what they are like underneath, and we are financially restricted atm so thought it would be cheaper to just carpet for now.

dont have a hall rather an entrance porch and the lounge has the stair leading up to the first floor, we are laminating the lounge and having carpet on the stairs and landing Grin

Saggarmakersbottomknocker · 11/05/2006 15:15

We have karndean on the hall floor and carpet on the stairs landing. Looks fine (well I think so lol!)

Tatties · 11/05/2006 15:16

Thanks for the link OO, they have a sale on!

Carpet
It does get grubby, even though we have a big porch for shoes coats etc. There's 1960s not-very-nice woodblock underneath (\link{http://www.dollshouse-tiles.co.uk/tfloor4.jpg\this} kind of thing), and we keep meaning to take up the carpet and restore it... but can't be bothered.

Greensleeves · 11/05/2006 15:18

me feet.

JackieNo · 11/05/2006 15:23

Our hall is tiny, so wall-to-wall doormat (like fitted carpet, only made out of doormat material, IYKWIM). V practical.
