Is this awful weather keeping people from buying for SS?

Saw on BBC that the retail consortium has reported that retailers are struggling because the cold weather has put people off buying warm weather clothes.

Am I the only person who's been drawn to bright yellow summer tops and sandals? I'm living in hope that the sun is coming soon and this is definitely reflected in my spending habits of late.

I've bought a few things but most are along the lines of light jackets and jeans which is what I'll wear all through the summer if the past few years are anything to go by.

I have finally realised that living in the uk there is no poing spending lots on high summer stuff - white jeans yes but sundresses - a couple is more than enough.

PretzelTime · 27/03/2013 15:55

I bought some SS stuff in February (!) when I was tempted by the new collections and wanted to be prepared for warmer weather...hah!

But now I have no desire to buy anything else until the weather changes.

GoingVerySlowlyMad · 27/03/2013 16:23

I am going away this summer so have been taking advantage of all the shops running their 20 - 40% reduction events to get together my holiday wardrobe. Have gotten some cracking bargains! But alas, if I wasn't going away I doubt I would have bought anything as this weather isn't particularly inspiring.

naturelover · 27/03/2013 16:25

Today I bought a merino knitted dress in the sales and a sleeveless dress for a wedding this summer. I desperately hope to wear the latter a few times but if last summer is anything to go by then it won't happen! Depressingly, the merino dress will get lots of wear now if this cold snap continues.

Like many of you, my summer wardrobe is small and lasts for years as it gets so little wear. As a result I don't get bored of those things and look forward to wearing my old favourites each year. I'll probably buy a handful of clothes but many will be mid-season type things rather than "summer" clothes.

If I had the chance to emigrate somewhere hot tomorrow I'd go without a moment's hesitation. I much prefer summer clothes to winter.

AmberNectarine · 27/03/2013 16:39

Hmm in the last week I've bought a sleeveless tee and slipper flats so maybe I think there's hope...

survivingwinter · 27/03/2013 17:09

I've bought clothes for dd as keep getting online deals from retailers like Vertbaudet but can't be bothered to venture to shops for me. Last time I looked I wasn't remotely tempted by anything - expensive, awful quality and nasty fabrics everywhere I went!

joliejolie · 27/03/2013 18:20

I've recently bought boots, as it is still wintery enough to get a bit of wear before (cough) spring arrives. But I also bought Zara sandals, White Company broderie top, Uniqlo dress, & Other Stories dress and a Mango floral top...all exceptionally summery and I'm anxious to wear it all!

Like everyone else I haven't bought lightweight things either. I would have bought more tran-seasonal or warm garments if the retailers had a collective brain larger than a walnut and had the sense to leave a few warm things in the shops!

To wit:

  • need smart cocktail dress for a party in NYC really soon. Forecast for that night is 1C and we have a couple of different venues to go to, zig-zagging across Manhattan. I wanted a beautiful dress with SLEEVES that I can throw a coat over. Otherwise my arms will be freezing. But No. The shops are full of sleeveless/strapless things made of tissue paper. Grrr. Ended up getting something off Ebay, so the retailers miss out.
  • All the little faux fur evening jackets and stoles have vanished from the shops, to be replaced by tiny lightweight shrugs. So I bought a black faux fur evening jacket from a vintage store, again the retailers miss out.
  • Chasing a tweedie jacket for DH, there were stacks in the shops at Xmas, but we didn't want to buy then as he was still slimming. He's at ideal weight now, and there isn't a tweedie jacket to be found alive. Again, we had money burning a hole in our wallet and nothing to buy. We tromped Westfield and Oxford St. I can see we'll be back at the vintage shop for that too.

So not a drop of sympathy for the retailers - they need to use a bit of common sense and put things in store that we want to buy.

Ooh, that feels better! Rant over.

madammecholet · 27/03/2013 18:37

I pretended it was spring today and wore cigarette thin trousers and leopard ballerinas into town. I WAS FREEZING! Boots and jeans back out for tomos...

I have bought today tho:

Coral cardi
Black roll up cotton chino's
bright coral/red cigarette trousers - ankle skimmers
bright pink sheer shirt - £5 in H&M sale, will clash with coral cardi
tan leather sandals

All gone in wardrobe tho...(till sat...when I fly to the sun ;)

Startail · 27/03/2013 18:44

It's been wet the last two summers here, so I have stuff ive hardly worn.

any how it was snowing coming back from music lessons, so I fear, sandals are a long way off.

foxysocks · 27/03/2013 19:13

I just bought a pair of silver sandals, but they were massively reduced

landofsoapandglory · 27/03/2013 19:24

We had a really nice Spring like day, one Saturday in February so I went out and treated myself to some nice coloured skinny jeans, pretty tops and some nude patent loafers. None of them have been worn!

Last Saturday I took some jeans back and exchanged them for a ditsy print maxi skirt, which needs to go back because unless I put the waist band above my boobs it is too long!

I have bought this jumper and this jumper because I am sick of wearing Winter colours.

Oh, and I have bought 2 bikins ready for my holiday!

ZZZenAgain · 27/03/2013 19:29

I am still muffled up to the eyeballs when I go out. Freezing cold here still. I will wait a bit before I go shopping for nice weather clothes. Seen a lot of lime green in the shop windows which doesn't do it for me, usually in combination with hot pink and a sort of dusty dark purple. So not really tempted. I like a bit of colour but lime green and I switch off.

Sonotkylie · 27/03/2013 19:30

Have bought 2 jersey maxi skirts, 2 long sleeve shirts, purple skinny trousers, camo fleece lined jogging bottoms from Hush and a coral long sleeve jumper. That'll do me for summer ... So no, not put off by freezing temperatures but not buying overtly summer stuff either

missorinoco · 27/03/2013 19:36

Yes. I bought a pair of shorts last July and didn't get to wear them. It at least has to stop snowing and thaw before I entertain the notion of summer wear. My summer holiday is in UK though; if I was going somewhere where I could guarantee better weather I might have comfort purchased.

Nooooooo....come on you lot, we're British!!! There's always hope......I've bought quite a bit Grin....sick of black!

Drywhiteplease · 27/03/2013 19:50

Just we're a vest underneath!

MrsCampbellBlack · 27/03/2013 20:06

I did try today - wore new h&m victoriana blouse as was the sun was shining but its just too cold. Came home and changed into gap neon sweatshirt and put heating on and made pizzas.

Honestly the weather needs to cheer up or i will be the size of a house as doing far too much baking.

Spamspamspam · 27/03/2013 20:33

See I am a bit different - as sales are low there are massive bargains to be had. Even in the last week by buying the same shopping bag of online items I have saved over £100 from a new promotion...was dithering last week but with the extra discount today I went for it and bought a load of spring/summer things that I know will last for years. I also buy a lot of winter things at this time of the year in the sales for next year but I have noticed that a lot of stuff is out of stock far quicker than normal Sad

JumpHerWho · 27/03/2013 21:21

Ha me too with the baking overload Mrs CB... awaiting chocolate ginger orange brownies from the oven to go with my massive mug of tea atm

UntamedShrew · 27/03/2013 21:31

I bought three jumpers in Whistles last week. Grin
Just couldn't bear to look at my other ones again - feel like I've worn them solidly for two years!

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 27/03/2013 21:33

I haven't bought any new clothes except bras all year, this is practically unheard of Grin

It is just too cold to even think about spring and summer clothes. And at this rate there will be no need for spring things, we are going to go directly to summer stuff when the weather eventually turns.

Drywhiteplease · 27/03/2013 21:35

MrsCB the blouse looks lovely on you on the blog....I really want it now!
