Can I use home hair dye on highlighted hair?

Can anyone help me.... I want to go bank to my natural dark brown, I've had blonde highlights put in my hair twice, last time was 10 months ago, since then I've had two lots of brown highlights (lowlights?) put in, so my hair is mostly brown with a few blonde bits left. Can I put a dark brown home hair dye onto my hair?
Thanks

I do. I went from brown with highlights to red last week.

I did because I couldn't afford to go back to the hairdressers Blush

Looked ok, did have to re-do every 4-6 weeks (to hide the grey) but finish was fine - John frieda mousse in light natural brown all the way!!

Thanks, for the replies you have reassured me to do it!

For an even, lasting color. Put a red in first(yes it may go abit pinky on the blonde that's ok)
wash out and dry and then put the brown on.The color will "grab" better and not fade out which can happen when you go over blonde.

Should be ok although I did end up with a very strange green tinge when I dyed over highlights. A red based brown over that fixed it but ended up much darker than I'd originally planned. Thankfully I liked it.

Can I jump in with a bit of a hijack??

What about if you have blonde highlights and want to stay blond. Is that do-able? It's getting so expensive at the hairdressers. I've short hair.

My highlights went pale orange last time I did that with a chocolate colour dye. I had to go to the hairdressers to have it dyed red then very dark brown to get it anywhere near acceptable which defeated the object as I was trying to save money.
