I'm confused about waist sizing in jeans.

I've seen some 7 for all mankind jeans but there in waist sizes not clothes sizes.

I'm an 8 in karen millen jeans, a 29 in all saints jeans but my natural waist is 28".

Both of these jeans measure 31" on the waist when I measured them. I am confused.

What size am I? I thought this stuff would get easier as I got older.

I think as a rough guide a 26 waist jean is a dress size 8, 28 is a 10, 30 a 12 and so on. However I have jeans ranging from 27-29 waist; there really is no substitute for trying them on as they vary so much between brands and even stles within brands.
