Non floral/flouncy/girlie day dresses?

I would like to wear more dresses in the day (bored with jeans) but all the 'day' dresses I see on the high street are either too cute/girlie/skater style or full on peplum/bodycon shift style! What kind of casual dresses do people wear?

I'm 38, 5'4" hourglassy shape, dark skin, short/pixie cut hair. (I feel silly wearing floral/flouncy stuff with my short hair, just doesn't look right IMO!) Most of the dresses in my wardrobe are evening ones that I couldn't really wear out casually Wink

I'm on a similar hunt myself, but Primark have a couple of denim shirt dresses in at the moment which are very easy to wear and comfortable- slightly too short for me (I hate my knees) but might work for you?

Mummynotmum · 19/03/2013 18:25

Scented, I could have written that post! I hate my knees too, and most of the dresses in the shops are above the knee! I just want something plainish, stylish, with a sleeve, 3/4 or long pref, and just below the knee! Where is it???

ScentedNappyHag · 19/03/2013 18:33

It's a nightmare isn't it? I'm too short for maxis and no one would thank me for showing off my thighs and bum either Wink all the ones I've found of the perfect style are out of my price range Confused have a look at stopstaring.com though, if your purse is a bit more forgiving than mine!

Don't mind my knees (they will be covered in opaque tights anyway). Everything I saw earlier would make me look like a Topshop Teen!

not floral but nice print

plain

ScentedNappyHag · 19/03/2013 18:43

The plain one is nice Cock (Ffs Grin), I do love a dress with pockets!

MooMinCow · 19/03/2013 18:43

Thanks Cock (snigger). I like the plain navy one (have extensive scarf selection that would jazz it up). Not sure about the collar on first one but print is nice. I always forget to look as ASOS!

I think Joe Browns do some really nice dresses. A lot of them are floral and floaty but equally a lot of them aren't.

I have a few vero moda bits and have been impressed so far, especially with the price!!!

I don't own anything by VM, but will investigate. I quite like the look of this Warehouse dress, or this striped one, but would have to try on.
